Hi.

I'm a novice at CAD. But I am also a 27-year experienced builder. Software is NOT like the real world, and I'm stymied as to how to do this in a speedy way (as opposed to creating mortises in each body one body at a time...)

In the attached files, you'll see a door jamb, a hinge, and a door. These are all 'components.'

The jamb is one component. It is a double-door jamb. (Two doors in one opening, both hinged to the jamb.)

The door and the hinge are two separate components within another component.

So it is component1 = jamb, and component2 = door and hinge.

The hinge has two joints defined on three 'bodies': pin-to-leafA and pin-to-leafB.

I have not defined materials or appearances for any of them.

These components will be re-used (if it works that way):

The 'component1' jamb will be re-used at the far end of the same wall it is in. (Same door needed there)

The 'component2' door/hinge assembly will be reversed to become the opposite-swing door.

The hinge will be repeated three times per door within each 'component2'

Notice that the jamb and the door do NOT have mortises in them.

I had hoped to be able to use the hinge component itself to 'cut' the mortises somehow as I was placing them, but it seems I cannot do that.

I can create the other door as a component if I cannot make the door mirror itself, and I can re-arrange the way I organised the component hierarchy if I need to. (Though that means having to start over)

Now to my request:

What is the fastest or most efficient way to cut mortises into BOTH the door jamb(s) and the door(s)?

That means putting six mortises in the jamb, and three each per door.

The fastest and easiest way to do it is use user parameters, And draw it how it's built as in each part of the door jamb is in it's own component so it has 3 components depending on how you make the door jamb, and do each part in their own files, so you have a door jam file and a door file.

The door jamb will be left side, top and right side, by useing user parameters you can get away with just drawing up one door jamb, to make it a different size you would just do a save as then adjust the user parameters to make it wider. higher or how ever you wont it to be.

In addition to @daniel_lyall's recommendations, you can create a cut template for the hinge (and make it a sub component in the hinge component). You could use the hinge if it weren't for the screw holes. Create a joint between the hinge and door and another between the hinge and frame. Once the hinge is in place use Combine|Cut to create the mortises.

@etfrench You beat me to it, I had to pop out before I was able to finish.

@drew To what @etfrench says you would use the hinge template as the tool to cut the hinge mortise out in the model, as each type of hinge you will use changes you just open up the default door, door jamb and hinge template file do a save as set them to size then done, Just use a name for the file that is easy to rember what size the opening it's for, after doing a different saved as copy you will start to run out of needing to do new files.

Also doing each part of the door jamb, door and hinge in their own components with each body of the door, door jamb and hinge as a subcomponents of it's part.

So it will be component 1 as the door jamb with the left side, top and right side as components inside the door jamb component then another component as the door not sub components inside each part like door jamb, with the door in the door jamb model (there is a drawing bug with have a component with many sub components) you will be able to spit out a drawing that is on point to the model

Doing the template file will take time but, it will be a one time thing. All the cabinet making I do, it all started from 2 files a single cabinet and double cabinet I sketched it up in a order of components.

So all I have to do is do a save as and remove what's not needed save, change the size, hit save and now I have a bookshelf, it's that simple, it just takes time to do it onces.

And if you wont an example just say

Replying to you, since you were first to suggest using parameters - but incorporating other suggestions about allowing the ability to re-use these things by varying the values of the parameters...

If I understand what's being suggested, I am to replace all entered "hard" values with parameters when creating my parts, and each is a standalone component.

I would need to start over - create (it seems at thinking about this) something like 7 to 10 parameters to describe each jamb side (if I include the rebate for the jamb head), 5 to describe the jamb head, maybe another 6 to locate and cut the mortises in the jamb.

Then I'd need minimum 3 to describe the door, and another 6(?) to describe and cut the mortises on the door. (Can't re-use mortise parameters from jamb to doors unless I take control of the offset from top and bottom with yet other parameters...)

That's prolly another four to six hours at the pace I work with this software.

<sound of screeching brakes>

Hmm. OK. For this project, the client gets static non-hinged doors to look at. Or I'll draw it on paper in a half hour if I can't make the hinges look right in the Fusion drawing by just placing them where I want them and ignoring mortises.

I'm down this rabbit hole too deep as it is, buckets of hours now down the pipe.

Some other day when I can spend the whole day scratching my head and cussing at the computer I'll see if I can watch enough youtube videos on parameters to attempt this solution.

When I do, I will make sure to come back and mark this as the answer if it works.

Thank you all for the input.

hi drew, Daniel is right, Parameters are the best way to do this. Here I've built a simple single door and loaded it up with parameters.I haven't aded the hinges are applied any joints, but shows you how I built three simple sketches: Two for the door and jambs and interfaces/gaps and one for the hinge layout.

I'll preface this, with I've used this method to build wood jambs for a hollow metal door, and I did work for a door manufacturer before, so I'm super aware of what you're trying to accomplish.

happy to answer any questions you may have. If you look at the sketches and the parameters dialog you can see how I've made this.

Here's my take on doing a door jamb and it's door with hinges. it's metric and it's fully parametric, I still need to do a screencast to show how to use it, my nets going wonky it may take some time to get it done.
