Yep, these workarounds don't really work for every application.

We are all waiting for upgraded BOM and drawing functionality. In the meantime you might want to take a look at OpenBOM, which has a Fusion 360 plugin.

Hi All

Instead of asking yet another question on this very helpful forum, I have decided to post a nice (I think) work around for the parts list issue that I and some others find cumbersome at least. If this is a repeat of someone else's post, I apologize - I looked but there is a lot of them to sift through.

The issue I refer to is that for large assemblies having many sub-components and sub-sub-components is usually a necessity to make the Browser workable for finding, hiding showing, isolating etc. However, many times, this totally screws up the parts list if the arrangement of subcomponents to make the Browser usable does not match how you want the parts list to be organized. Fasteners is a perfect example. I don't want them in their own subassembly, I want them counted in an upper level assembly. But putting 129 fasteners in that level makes for a LOT of scrolling and if they are not all grouped together it makes the other components very hard to find easily. I know this will be fixed someday but until then here is what I do:

The last steps in my timeline always arrange my components and subcomponents so the browser is easy to use (ie all the same fasteners in their own sub-component). This is where I work. If I want to modify a part it is easy to find and it works best for animations, motion studies, joints and just generally manipulating the model. When I want to make a drawing with a parts list I roll the history marker before this arranging section and make the drawing from that point. And wala, parts list just the way I wanted it and an organized browser by shifting the history marker back to the end.

OK it's not perfect, if I want to add a part or another 129 fasteners I can make them before the arranging section or make them and their joints at the end of the timeline but they will then need to be shifted before the arranging section to maintain a usable browser and then arranged into the appropriate subassembly for organization.

Anyway, maybe someone else will find this workaround useful.

Now if I could only personalize the columns in the parts list ........

Matt

Thanks for the post. It is definitely helpful.

I think that whole area of work that comes after you've modeled and assembled the design has to be developed much more. Printing a BOM on paper is a bit out of date and not being able to really manage and manipulate that data in the cloud and leverage the clads power for it is almost silly . There is so much untapped potential to improve workflows!

Does the workflow proposed in that post not work for you ?

You mean the workaround by exploding subcomponents into top level list of components and having tens of screws and nuts in the component tree? No, this is not an option for me. Please provide a better solution for this problem. The workaround with adding additional subasebly views to new sheets (or the same sheet) of the drawing is also not acceptable as there is no way to combine 2 or more tables together.
