Adding more features to pattern

I have created a ring that I wish to pattern a flat, a hole, and a cut feature around (three instances). Initially I created the flat , patterned it around the axis, and all worked well. I then rolled back the pattern, added the hole, and then attempted to edit the pattern to add it, but it would not accept the additional feature.

Thinking that I messed something the first time, I deleted the pattern, created a new one with the flat and hole, and it worked. I then rolled back again, added the cut feature, and tried adding this to the pattern I just created, but pattern again refused to accept the addition.

I can not believe that Fusion simply does not allow features to be added to patterns, so there must be some voodo that i am doing incorrectly. Any insights?

I am new to Fusion 360 so thanks for your help!

Hi @Anonymous,

I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble with editing a pattern! Sometimes you'll need to clear the current selections for an edited pattern before you can add more; have you gotten a chance to try that?

Hi Kate,

Yup, tried that. No dice. After clearing it only lets me select a single feature - the hole or flat or cut, but not more than that.

Other ideas?

Hi @Anonymous,

Did you clear the axis selection as well? You should only need to clear the axis selection to be able to select more faces/features to pattern. If you make a brand new circular pattern and select the axis before the features to pattern, you'll only be able to select one there as well (selecting the axis "locks in" the pattern).

If that's still not working for you, can you please make a screencast showing your workflow?

Hi,

You see your problem here is that you didn't consider the timeline issues that comes from editing something that comes before the pattern

The best thing to do is to delete the pattern from the timeline and then add everything you want to the feature you want a pattern of

Here is a screencast that shows a good way to deal with this

@SaeedHamza, thanks for your step by step demonstration. The good news is that I see how to make a new pattern. However, it seems that this is a workaround to what I think is a fairly straightforward problem.

@kate.raskauskas, thanks again for checking in. I tried deleting the axis and re-selecting it, but then I was not permitted to select the axis again! I have attached a short screencast showing what I could only call glitches for your edification.

For the record, I am able to create a new pattern that includes all the features I need, but being forced to do this on a more mature design can cause a world of hurt. For instance, if I mated a part to one of the patterned holes, or I added a feature that referenced one of the patterned holes, then deleting the pattern would cause everything to blow up. By contrast, simply editing the pattern to include a new feature as I am attempting to do, would maintain the relationships and eliminate the need to repair the broken model. This is how Solidworks does things and I think it is rather intuitive, and essential.

Please let me know if you have any idea what may be preventing me from selecting the axis or any other suggestions or news.

Hi,

your problem is that you suppressed a pattern, the editing results are there, but it needs to be unsuppressed

@SaeedHamza The suppressed pattern is one that I created after I gave up on repairing the original pattern so I could continue working on the model. I named these "Broken pattern" and "Working Pattern" to distinguish between the two, but I realize I should have made this clear in my last post.

For the reasons I stated earlier, it is essential to have the ability to edit a pattern. Creating a new pattern is a hack that will work for the time being, but will fail me once the model matures and I find myself needing to update the pattern further.

You have no problem at all my friend, the only problem here is that you aren't selecting all the features in the pattern

What ever you want to create, go back in the time line one step before the pattern creation, and edit as you like, then roll the time line courser after the pattern and double click it to select the new features that you created
