Hi all,

When doing assembly I know fusion 360 offers 2 options:

1. Add components locally within a design - then these components are an integral part of the design (1 design with many components)

2. Create a new design and drag and drop existing designs into the new design - then the "parent" design is an assembly, and all the child designs are links to separate designs.

I understood that working with option 1 - I can edit one component inside an assembly, which makes life easier because I am editing the component online on the fly with reference to the entire assembly, but the drawback is that I cannot save the components separately, they will always be part of the design - meaning that if I want to use the components in other designs or assemblies, I need to save them as a copy - but then they are not linked to the original component and If I change the original design, the changes will not be implemented in its copies.

When using option 2 - I can save each design individually, and then put them in an assembly and use them in any other assemblies, and when I change each design, the change will be implemented in all the assemblies containing this design, this is great, but with this option I cannot edit each of the designs inside the assembly, I need to edit it separately outside of the assembly, which makes it pretty difficult to handle and edit the design in the context of the assembly.

Is there any way to combine the two options? the limitations of each of the options are contributing to a poor workflow, what can be done to improve this?

Hope the post is not too long

Thanks,

Assaf.

You post is not too long and your question is a very good question.

Unfortunately, currently there is noting that can be done about this limitation at the user level.

The abhility to edit linked components from within an assembly is on the roadmap I believe but it'll take a while.
