I have created a simple dowel pin with a cir-clip groove in one design project by combining 2 components to form a third component, the finished dowel pin.

I want to use this component in another design but when I try and "paste new" I get an error "combine 1".

I can however, paste in either or both of the other components with no problems but not the one that had been formed by combining the other 2.

I can copy and paste the combined component ("Paste New") without any issues in the design it was created in....

I am obviously missing something, any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Welcome to the Fusion 360 forum.

What you are seeing is expected. The first and second component are parametrically "whole". They can be pasted into other designs and bring all the information needed to build them along for the ride.

But the third component, when pasted into a new design, doesn't bring component 1 and 2 with it. So there are missing references. The combine shows an error because it is using cached data for it's inputs, specifically component 1 and 2. (Within the same design, those inputs are available so it doesn't need cached data and doesn't error)

You could use "insert" instead of paste to re-use the design. (right click on the data panel icon - Insert into current design)

If you don't want a link between the files, right click on the linked file in your model browser (after it's inserted) and use Break Link.

If you just want the geometry, and have no need for the whole parametric history, you can remove the history prior to copy and paste.

There are a few more ways to do this. Let me know what works best for you and if you have any questions.

Thanks,
