How to export model after simulation simplify?

Hello!

In latest update there is a way to simplify models for simulations by deleting fillets, faces etc. but I can't see the option to export model after that. Is it possible to export to stl. simplified model?

Hi @mcgavish,

Thank you for posting!

The simplify workspace is only accessible from the inside of a simulation study so as far as I know, Exporting is not supporting yet. But you will be able to clone the model inside Simulation.

As of now, If you want to get as a model, you should modify it in the model environment with the Delete function.

Thank you for very fast response! Yes, I know that I can remove features in Model mode, but this Simplify function works much faster. It will be awesome to have such feature in Mode too, or possibility to export model from Simulation.

Hello, I am glad you like the Simplification tools, and we are working on providing a way to directly export the model from Simplify.

As a workaround, you can select your components in Simplify, right click and Copy to clipboard, then paste them into a new document as the base model. You will then be able to export.

We have discussed whether the simplification tools would be useful in the base model environment, could you please describe your workflow and why you would use these tools in a non-simulation modeling workflow?

Fusion 360 is strongly used in game dev companies for creating hard surface models. It gives a possibility to achieve awesome results which are hard in traditional modeling solutions (for example poly-modeling in 3DS Max). Also its non-destructivity is very desirable because we can make changes in our designs any time.

Simplification tools will be very useful in exchanging high poly model (model with fillets, chamfers, very high quality) to low poly models which are optimized for games (without fillets etc. geometry is as simple as possible). Then we bake all the details from high poly to low poly by normal maps.

Simplification tools will give us an opportunity to achieve good results almost by one click. It will be very helpful even only in Simualtion mode (if implementing in Model mode is hard) but with quick .STL export ability.

Your workaround works perfectly, thank you! Of course it's a bit slow method, but it works as we would like to.

It would be incredible if Fusion 360 was a bit more adjusted for game art not only engineering.

You are very welcome. The export feature was already being worked on, so I can't take the credit, but I will certainly pass your kind words on to the team that did the implementation.

We are still discussing whether to make the de-featuring tools available in the main modeling environment, that should make your life even easier.

Hi!

I would love this feature. I design robots and then use the component STLs to simulate the machines in my control app. The simulation doesn't need every fastener and chamfer. The lower the triangle count, the better. All the internal faces? Don't need 'em. Faces abutting other faces? Gone. if I could have a watertight model of just the exterior-most faces, that would be nice.

I might be one of the only people who thinks "Too bad mcmaster models still include modelled threads instead of thread-as-texture." It would greatly reduce the triangle count.

...I might be missing how this works: I simplify a component, right click and go to where "save as STL" is usually found... no dice. export doesn't offer an STL option, either. Please: What am I missing?

How do I actually export the model as a STP file. You have said you added the feature years ago but I can't seem to find it on the latest 2019 version.

When you are in the Simplify workspace, click on the Simulation Model X browser item, right click, and choose Export.
