Insert Into Current Design is NOT Working

Ok, who broke it? Well, at least it gave me an error..

So, will this ever be a thing? I actually need it because I am stress testing Fusion 360 to see if I can merge different components made by different people and this type of workflow is pretty normal for any other software.

Up your game just a teeny bit here, you guys are about to WIN! 🙂

Error: Inserting a distributed design from one project to another is not currently supported.

The insert document or a copy of it will load if it is in the same Project in the Data Panel, for me at least.

If the models your trying to insert are part of a different project it will not work.

How can I move them across projects??!!?

It won't let me go up a directory to allow me to save it in a new project. This is VERY bad.. There has got to be a way.

Can I offline cache it, open it, and save it into a new target project?

If not, this is very, very very bad...

Open it up on the web (A360) and save as a .f3z file...then open that file in Fusion and save to your project but be warned it will not longer be linked to the other files in the other project.

You can also go through and break all the links in the files and export that directly from Fusion to your computer and open that file and save it in your project. Both will have the same effect of breaking links though...

They do have plans for cross project XRefs but who knows when that will be. Honestly this problem is minor in the grand scheme of Fusion 360 problems you haven't run into yet.

Edit: I forgot to mention it will send you a download link which you then will have to open your email and download each and every one you want to bring over then you will need to upload the .f3z file into the project before you can open it. Fun huh? wait until you have to do that with a hundred files....

Ok, here goes nothing... I am really honked right now... Thanks for enlightening me to the level of suck the cloud can be before I got too deep into it.

What kills me, and its funny and not, is that you can export iges, sat, etc ie NOT DXF etc NOTHING that you can bring into another project as an assembly LOL OH it hurts.... I think I am just going to save it out as a iges, and upload it into the new project.. Luckily don't have to edit it, its just a clearance test I need it for.. but sheesh this def screws things up a bit..

This isn't a solution, this is torture, so, I will not be clicking solution anywhere.. Man they need to fix this foolishness. Cmon. So many good things then this simple stuff turns to tragedy lol they need to let us own our files fully and be able to export and import in the native format for situations like this...

Are you sure you’ve read and understood what @PhilProcarioJr wrote ?

You can save an entire Fusion 360 Assembly as a .f3z file. That will contain all components of that assembly.

The disadadvantage is that you’ll loose the version history of the assembly Antje involved components. Only the latest version is exported.

In. A productive environment This is hardly acceptable.

Cross project workflows currently are not ‘really’ possible in Fusion 360 without some strong compromises.

I never said it was an acceptable solution, but it is the only solution you have available to you.

The things that Fusion does well are great, but at the end of the day they have a long way to go before it is ready for any serious commercial use on many fronts.

As I said before this is a very minor problem when you look at the big picture of problems facing Fusion right now.

You will have a lot of people say it is ready for prime time use...sadly I am not one of those people that will tell you that.

I feel they have a long way to go before being able to claim that.

Fusion will SOMEDAY be a great CAD package and it gets better all the time, it just has a ways to go before that day arrives.

Well, in this case, this works, just a bit clunky.

Need to work all my components into the same project from now on.. OK, this will do for now...

Can I still edit this in this particular form? Or are there any other restrictions of the imported archived item?

The only restriction is the new files are not linked to the old one and previous versions are not available. You can fully edit the files.
