[Under Development] Customizable Keyboard Shortcuts!!

We know you’ve been waiting for this folks! It’s one of the top 10 Idea Station requests. Comments, emails, tweets, letters written in blood… we get your requests from everywhere!

And I’m happy to share the news that we are working on it!

As an Experience Designer for Fusion, I would like to offer a sneak peek into the UI that our teams are working on:

As you can see above, a new section will be added to Fusion Preferences that will allow viewing and modifying all keyboard-accessible commands. We are working hard to make the navigation as simple as possible, so you can use it as a reference tool as well, that simply lists all available default shortcuts.

To modify or assign a shortcut, just click on it in the SHORTCUT KEY column and type the new one.

"Wait, what if I accidentally assign a key that already does something else? Will you crash my Fusion?” *frown*

Well no, we’ve got you covered. Fusion will immediately prompt you that there is a conflict, and you will have a choice to keep the either of the commands on that key:

Quickly wanna find a command? It will have a search box that will look through the ocean of all commands in Fusion and present matches:

Few notes:

Customizations will be synced with your Autodesk account, so you will get the same environment if you borrow your neighbor’s computer (don’t).
There will a button that brings back factory defaults. (AKA We told you so).

In future we are also planning two nifty little additions:

Print Reference Sheet – Will export a well-formatted printable file that contains a list of all commands that have a shortcut key assigned, custom or otherwise. You can use this file as a cheat sheet to improve your productivity. You can also print it and pin it next to your desk (save paper though).
Import/Export – Want your entire team to have same Fusion environment? Want to boast your ultra-productive shortcut set to your designer friends? This function will give you a file that you can send to other Fusion users and they can Import it on their account to get your customizations. Cool, eh?

That looks amazing!! I have been looking forward to this for some time 🙂

Just 2 questions:

Is there a expected month of release for this awesome addition to Fusion?
Will it be possible to use the keyboard shortcuts for add-ins as well? I know they work in a different way and are loaded each time Fusion is started, but I was wondering if you were considering implementation functionality for setting keyboard shortcuts for add-ins.

It would be great if this would not be limited to only the keyboard buttons but also would extend to mouse/device buttons.

If you have keyboard assignments then you can use the mouse/device software to map buttons to keyboard assigned commands. I haven't really seen a software that extends mouse or 3d mouse inputs.

I have tried my self to map to a little Bluetooth button array, using p-invoke to control the us driver is really difficult and is not universal so every device would have to be coded.

If you still would like to see that feature please add a new ideastation post for it!

I am not sure who exactly you are responding to, but I've asked for the ability to remap mouse buttons in the Idea Station years a go in the thread with the most requested Fusion 360 feature, keyboard customization.

This can be done in Blender very easily BTW, so for now I have viewport pivoting and panning in Blender re-defined to work like Fusion 360 (so exactly the opposite from Blender's more sensible default) while I would really prefer to be able to re-map Fusion to work like Blender

Can't wait for this to go live! Looks like the team has anticipated followup requests (printing, import/export, and global syncing). Will it roll out to browser editor too?

Please let Fusion have also the shortcut for last command (any last command) Like spacebar in Inventor. Thats the best shortcut 🙂

Great, can't wait for it.

Just one thing ( - not sure it is the same request @TrippyLightingalso had - 😞 The one "key" I most urgently want to be able to adjust is the one I need to change mouse-behavior pan/zoom/rotate.

As this does not appear as "function", it might not be in the concept you currently have?

Agree with @Anonymous and @TrippyLighting using the middle button on my mouse for anything other than scroll / zoom is the absolute worst.. Am coming from Rhino where navigation style is based on RMB, which is most comfortable. [Right Mouse button with modifer keys to swtich between ZOOM (shift rmb) PAN (alt or ctrl + RMB) and ROTATE (RMB only) ]

pressing on the fusion / MMB on my (logitech G5) mouse cause a sickening random zoom in/zoom out behavior while I'm trying to do anything else... And it doesn't appear that any of the other styles (Alias, fusion, inventor, Solidworks) seem to do anything like that, so I'd request mapping mouse as well (or at least add Rhino Style.

@matth Maybe the software you use does not do it - I have few that do it.

Just alone the mapping ability of navigation too different "standard" mouse buttons is crucial

particularly because 99,99999% of all mice middle mouse button aka the scroll wheel button suck

I use a cad mouse with a dedicated middle mouse button since I got tired of the others.

Is it Christmas already?? This is absolutely fantastic new! Time to dust my Tipro 8x16 key programmable keyboard with custom key cap labels. All the goodness of Fusion 360 right under my fingertips.

And definitely we need some options to configure mouse buttons. The argument that the middle button of most mice "sucks" is rather weak: Get a proper mouse already! I mean, I'm using a very inexpensive Microsoft Optical mouse and the middle button is a joy to use, just make sure you test the mouse before you buy it.

I personally would like to be able to disable gestures and assign orbit to the RMB instead. I'm happy with MMB for panning, but there will be users who'd rather assign orbit to the MMB and pan to the RMB. Other actions that it would be nice to be able to assign are center view (currently MMB double-click) and set pivot point (currently Shift + MMB single-click), as well as zoom. It would also be nice to have a "precision mode" momentarily toggled by holding down a modifier key, to reduce zoom/orbit/pan speed by a given factor while the modifier is being held.

Just make it as customizable as possible, to ensure anyone coming from other software packages doesn't need to change their habits.

Please please add the shortcuts to find the components in window and browser.
click on a component and a key to press would be an awesome workflow to speed up things.
