Hi Community,

I'm a hobbyist using (free) Fusion for 3D printing and run into a problem - or out of ideas, whatever you prefer.

I have to design a 3mm circular groove in a cylindrical object . This groove will later accept a cicular sealing ring (15mm with a 2mm string), when the object to be designed will be screwed to the cylinder.

Is somebody aware of a tutorial to show this? Or can somebody explain the workflow or tools/commands to use, push me into the right direction please?

Thank you very much!

Just to add: I think I have to somehow project a circle to the cylinder and then use the sweep function to create the groove - but I struggle to bring the circle to the cylinder without distorting it.

Please see the model attached.

A word of caution, however, grooves that hold O-rings are never round in shape. The O-Ring will be deformed and needs space to expand. Grooves are square with rounded interior corners. The Parker O-ring handbook is an often used Engineering source for all things O-Ring.

Yes, @MRWakefield is right, but @TrippyLighting thank you for your support too.

The problem is: a sealing ring has a fix circumfence. Let's say (ignoring the string width), a 15mm ring has a circumfence of 47,12mm (pi x 15). Therefor, the groove must have the same length, but is not on a flat, but a concave surface. So the projection must be along one axis of the surface. And this is what I do not get done.

MRWakefield, if you could explain how you projected that circle on the surface, my problem would be solved. Or if you would publish the construction file, than I could analyze the timeline.

Thank you very much!

Background: The part I want to design is to be glued (or screwed (*)) over a hole in a barrel containing rain water. Yes, I know that this is a silly construction, but it's also a great learning experience on a function in Fusion. (*) this even more silly construction would need multiple layers of sealing.

I will look what it says.

I was already thinking about the correct form of the groove, since on one hand the surface should probably provide as much contact to the sealing, on the other hand the seal will be deformed when in place.

The handbook will probably give an answer. So again, thanks.

Ok, concave it is:

I've attached the model, the sizes are arbitrary but it shows how I did it. I used the 'Emboss' tool BTW.

The document that @TrippyLighting kindly linked to looks very comprehensive. You'll find details of face grooves on page 98. I must admit that I haven't dug too deeply but it looks like this document is all in inches though. I've found a similar document which is also from Parker but this one's in metric. You'll find details of face grooves on pages 10-11.

I've looked through the BS04518-1982 and ISO3601-1-2012 but they don't list a Ø15x2 size so I can't help with groove OD or ID I'm afraid.

Anyway, I hope this helps.

Let us know how you get on.

Thank you very much for the solution. This is exactly what I was looking for. I will now investigate how you have set up the Emboss tool.

In addition to that, thank you for pointing out the secondary document on seal rings. I was hoping for support on a Fusion issue, what I got from you and @TrippyLighting is far beyond my hopes and expectations. Great.

Thank you again, vielen Dank!

Peter
