does any one have any ideas or is it beyond the powers of standard fusion and need some special programing/app?

You can use the import spline csv add-in to achieve a variable pitch coil in a design.

Using the equations for a coil. You can create a spreadsheet that quickly calculates the XYZ locations of a variable pitch coil/helix.

http://mathworld.wolfram.com/Helix.html

Copy and Paste the results into a CSV.

Then in Fusion 360, use the ImportSplinesCSV add-in to create the variable pitched helix from the CSV file.

Here's a screencast showing a helical helix using a similar methodology.

See the attachments for samples and further details.

I hope that helps.
