Fusion has a tendency to turn imported curves (that are perfectly good to start with) into complete garbage. As a general rule, it's a good idea to redraw any imported curves that will be used for surfacing operations.

Below is a pic of your imported curves with the curvature combs turned on. You can see the curves are generally a mess. The part I circled is probably the specific reason for the failure. The curvature goes to a high value almost instantly at the end of the curve. You can't see this by just looking at the line, but it's there in the mathematical definition of the vector. Some times you can cur this part out and just redraw the segment, but redrawing the whole curve is better.

Clean curves give you clean surfaces. Another benefit is that clean curves process faster, so your program doesn't get bogged down.

Hey,

So I'm pretty new to Fusion and I've been teaching myself for the most part. I'm trying to make a track spike shoe on the program for a school project and I am having trouble with patching up projected sketches from Illustrator after projecting them onto surfaces. Sorry if I screw up some of the terminology, I'm still new to the program.

Here's what I'm doing:

1. Export AI file of the sole pattern of the track spike into an SVG or DXF (doesn't work no matter which I pick). The vector in AI is forsure a closed shape. I can fill it with color and change line weight like any other vector.

2. Insert the SVG/DXF into a Fusion on an offset plane. Comes in as a green line.

3. Project that sketch onto the bottom surface. Turns into a purple line. I've used both "Closest point" and "Along vector" methods. At this point, I get a warning that says that some selected curves cannot be projected.

4. When I try to patch the projected lines so I can thicken it out, only some of the lines are highlighted as blue so I can't complete the patch.

When I review the warning on the timeline after I project the sketch onto the surface, it says "Project to surface failed, please check the surface or vector!" Do note that I've had success with patching simple shapes like circles onto the surface so I don't think it's a surface problem. Maybe it's a problem with SVG/DXF files?

It's very similar to this problem that was posted here 3 years ago: https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/fusion-360-design-validate/error-projecting-svg/td-p/5442241

.ai and .f3d files and a screenshot attached below. Sorry if this sounds like an incoherent mess, it's 4:30 AM here and I've been on Fusion the whole night trying to figure this out.

Thanks.

So instead of directly projecting the SVG/DXF onto the surface, I splined over it beforehand and used that sketch to project onto surface instead. Worked fine when I selected "Along vector" and now I'm able to patch it and thicken. I do have to say though that it was a tedious workaround. It's the same workaround that was suggested 3 years ago in the thread I linked in the original post. The accuracy of imported SVG/DXF files from Illustrator need to be improved!!!
