Hi

I definitely think the concept of the press fit is a good idea, although I think the v5 with a ledge is a good idea to stop the pieces moving past each other.

I am also wondering whether the tab and slot or grooves would help to be longer so they cover a larger area to provide more bonding?

I also think I should swap to abs. What is the main printing variation between pla and abs. I print pla at around 200 degrees and the print bed at 50 degrees, with masking tape on the print bed. Does abs need to have a glass base and different temperature usage?

Kind Regards

Ian

Hi

I am trying to make a 3d printed frame. The Top Plate is going to be 10mm thick but I want to make it in segements.

This is my first idea:

8 segments, but I needed to make ledges on each side of the individual sections one on the bottom and one on the top of each to be able to join them.

So the sketch I adjusted to look like the last picture, so it will give me a 10mm cut out on one side and a 10mm extension on the top of the other side.

I extrude the section 10mm but carn't seem to make a ledge on the bottom side properly. The cutout needs to be 5mm up.

Hopefully you can understand what I am asking. I have attached the design for you to look at.

Its basically so I can glue each section together with some retention.

Kind Regards

Ian

It is not surprise that this does not work for you. Your sketch is in one word unusable. No constraints or dimensions, overlapping lines and the lines that would indicate the lap joints are not even connected to the circles so they cannot fine profiles for extrusion. Useless!

If this is a sketch imported from a df it was not designed correctly in the originating software either.

Attached is a version with a better sketch. I took some base dimensions and recreated the new sketch based on those

Hi

Sorry about the original file, I was going blind with this one, and I always seem to annoy you with my questions.

Sorry about that.

What you did with the plate is exactly what I want to do.

So how did you create the ledge arrangement?

From what I can see you created separate boxes to all for the ledge arrangement, which would allow for a positive or negative extruding.

I was having difficulty doing that because of the curve, but then again, I imagine I could have created individual arcs for the individual boxes.

Then I assume you grouped the separate boxes to the large part.

The design you did, are all the hole locations in the same places. I will try to do this correctly from scratch but its good to know the one you did is the perfect version.

Kind Regards

Ian (annoying aussie beginner)

I don't find your questions annoying. I apologize if I came across too harsh.

You should roll back the timeline in the design I had attached and then forward step by step to see how I created the design.

Pay particular attention to the settings in the extrude-cut dialogues for the lapped joint ends.

Hi

The aim for this is to modify a frame I am working on to be able to 3d print it. I need to make every thing thicker to add more strength.

One question though, I have these circular plates, that if I am going to make the uprights thicker and create parts to 3d print, I could possibly make the curve in the upright.

I can extrude the plane of the upright, but I am not sure how to not extrude the area where the plate is.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Kind Regards

Ian

@ianhughes7UFVF

Happy new year, Ian.

I assume with "I can extrude the plane of the upright" you mean in Fusion 360 terms: you did an "offset face" on one face of a body of the component "Side Support 8"?

I tried that, then tried to do a combine-cut with "Side Plate 2" as tool (one possible way - of several - to remove the geometry). The result didn´t look nice. Uups.....

Why? The faces of "Side Plate 2" and "Side Support 8" are not coplanar, there is a small but relevant angle between the faces:

angle between faces

I guess you just moved the body/component because in the timeline there is "Position6" (capture position) near the end.

As a general hint: when working with any 3D-CAD system you have to be careful to use the correct workflow and functions for the correct positions of the geometry - otherwise you will not have a lot of fun with the results. Here, I would suggest using a) joints or b) to create the new geometry at the correct (final) position and then use as-built joints.

Regards,

Manfred

Here's 2 approaches to what I think you want to do.

The first just takes the extrude you already tried and uses the combine tool to cut out the bit you don't want

the second is done with a sketch, and projecting edges into it to get the part you want to extrude. (there's 2 versions, depending on who you want the final part to look.)

Hi

In regards to the original project of making the sectional top plate of the frame, I was able to work out how you sectioned it and reproduced the same shape around the circle, but I have to look at the parts again, and change some parts, so that the same shape doesn't necessarily flow around the circle.

I can make the others individually if I had to.

But I tried saving the one part I did as a stl to print and use cura to get it ready. I told cura to print support material where necessary, but it appeared to ignore the area with the lower gap and ledge on top.

I was wondering if there is something I need to say in fusion to tell it it needs support material in that area before I save it as a stl file?

Any thoughts.

Kind Regards

Ian

Support material - settings are purely done in Slicers, Fusion would not know what you want when creating the STL.

I have used Cura in the past, and had no trouble setting up support, when required,

You get really stuck I have seen supplementary models made to work as support.

Not much wrong with the STL which version Cura, I didn't use the newer version.

might help.....

Hi

This project died a bit among all the other projects I was working on at the time. But since then everything has been finished and now I have time to concentrate on what I was planning.

So I want to 3d print a frame that is fundamentally made up of four flat rings and side supports. Attached is the Top Plate.

Now the original work I did, I tried to divide the plate into sections to fit on the 3d printer, but made a mess, in the context of making the ledges work.

I have attached first the plate that was created by Trippy Lighting. So this is where I am heading. Now I want to stay totally fusion native with this so my second attached file is the Top Plate sketched to correct diameters for what I want.

Now what I need to do is divide it into 8 sections. I also want to have the ledge arrangement on each end of the segmented piece, but this time I want to add a centered hole in the ledge sections to add a M3 bolt through later to add to strength when I glue the sections together.

So the main questions are, how do I segment the plate in fusion and how do I create those ledges in fusion?

I hope you can help, as for once I want to get away from 2d cad software and work totally in fusion.

Kind Regards

Ian

Hi

Thanks for the reply.

Your screencast is a great demonstration how to create the segmented plate I am after. I really appreciate the time you took to do it.

I will try it from scratch and see if I can reproduce what you did and reply again.

I will need to add 3mm holes in the middle of those ledges so that will be something I need to do next. I assume that will be something I will edit in the sketch before I revolve the whole drawing.

Kind Regards

Ian

Get the holes modeled in the first piece. Then when you pattern it around into eight pieces they will all have the holes.

You can certainly choose a different method of locating them, but here is what I did...

Screencast will be displayed here after you click Post.
76a46006-d71a-43d8-85ac-622c5f79e281
