I have tired to self learn how to project a sketch onto a curved surface. If i create a simple sphere and then create a curved line, everything seems ok. Works like it should.

What I am actualy trying to do is project a curved line onto a surface I created. (pulled a shpere onto the shape of mesh model of a head)

Everytime I try, i get the message "not support project sketch geometry into same sketch..."

a) nice use of English grammer.

b) when you click 'more info" it just takes you to another pop up box that repeats the same crypic message! 🙂

I'm hoping this screenshot will show some obvious stupid thing I'm doing, but I cant figure it out.

Thanks for any help!

You need two sketches to use Project to Surface. One sketch holds the source curve(s), and then you need to create a second sketch, choose Project to surface, choose the surface and the curve(s) from the first sketch. The reason for the second sketch is so that the dependency is clear. Sketch2 depends on Sketch1.

In this case the surface is curved so how can one project lines onto a curved body if it requires a second sketch, which is flat?

I was hoping this feature would project lines from a sketch onto curved bodies as the name Project to Surface would indicate. If it only projects onto a sketch then shouldn't it be called Project to Sketch?

Anyway, if this feature doesn't project onto bodies, is there another way to project a sketch onto a body?

Although a Sketch is ASSOCIATED with a flat, 2D plane or face, that doesn't mean it can only contain 2D elements drawn on that plane or face.

Sure, most of the sketch drawing tools only draw 2D stuff as you would expect. You can't "draw" off that 2D plane or face. But you CAN move that 2D stuff OFF OF that 2D plane or face (in a 'Z' direction, if you will). And you can use some of the Project options to create stuff off of that 2D plane or face. That's right, 3D stuff CAN exist in a Sketch.

Go ahead. Create one 2D Sketch as a source. Create a second Sketch on a plane or face somewhere (anywhere...it's only because to start a sketch you have to select SOMETHING for it to associate with) and then try the Project to Surface tool or the Include 3D Geometry tool. You'll see.

Yes, I've been trying to get it to work, and have watched one official video on the subject, but it doesn't work like in the video. (Which incidentally, doesn't create a second sketch.)

The GUI allows one to select one sketch and one body. If this is intended to work with two sketches, then which one do I pick in the GUI, and which one does it pick as a "second sketch"? There are lots of other sketches in my model it could have chosen randomly.

In the screencast below you will please note:

1. You cannot use any of the Sketch>Project options unless you are editing a sketch.

2. It will not let you use Project to Surface if you editing the sketch that the source is in.

3. Therefor you need another sketch to project into.

4. Doesn't matter where that sketch is associated, since you aren't going to be drawing any 2D stuff on it anyway. I made an offset plane out to the side to use, but you can use anything. You just have to have a second sketch to do the projection into.

5. After doing the projection, the resulting lines are IN that second sketch, but are not ON the plane of it.

6. Also please understand that if the face you choose to project onto crosses the "projection" direction in more than one place, as the outside surface of my cylinder does, that it will cut all the way through if you use the Along Vector setting, so if you only want to project onto the front with that setting, you would have to split the cylinder body, project onto only one half of it, and then combine the halves back together, or something that give you a face to project onto that doesn't wrap back around through the vector again.

Unless you projected onto a planar (flat) surface, it won't be recognized as a profile by Fusion (get shaded in tan). If it isn't a profile, then you can't use the Model>Create>Extrude tool on it.

Maybe you can use the projected lines to Model>Modify>Split Face the surface, and then Model>Modify>Push Pull the faces.

If you really want a straight extrusion, then just extrude from the same thing that you projected from instead of projecting from it.

Think about it like this:

Since you will be projecting onto a curved surface, the resulting lines/points will be a 3D sketch. And since a 3D sketch can have lines/points anywhere in space relative to the sketch plane they belong to, it doesn't really matter where that sketch plane is.

Hi,

This is an article from 2018.
At that time, various tools that are available today did not yet exist.
If you describe a use case in a new thread, you will also receive answers that take into account the tools available today.

Well, i also see it's so weird. Also i have this new problem :
- i see extrude function cannot extrude profile sketch from many different
sketches planars, mean it only extrude profiles from just one planar a
time. For many different height objects want to extrude onetime to 1 planar
, it cannot work. Do you catch it?
