Perpendicular Measurement?

noob question

i'd like to measure a distance at right angle to an edge, ie perpedicular. But the snap points provided don't give that.

i think when drawing it's done with constraints, but not sure how to apply a constraint to a measuring tool.

over here they're using Construct, but no success trying various "axis perpendicular to".

my goal is to find the halfway point.

There are two ways I would go about this. The first is to turn off snap in the sketch menu to see if that fixes the issue or in the sketch you can try to draw a line between the two points you are trying to measure while the angle is locked to make sure the line is parallel.

Note, i'm trying to measure, not sketch.

I see 'snap to grid' in the bottom toolbar, but already off.

tried that, but could not select my segment with the perpendicular constraint. Maybe because my starting line is an edge in an imported SVG. So i guess i'll have to solve that first. File attached, if you have any ideas.

The original pic in this thread, does what you want, no error, the measurement is perpendicular to both lines you selected,

If those two selected lines were not parallel, then Inspect would give you an angle measurement instead. Yep Fusion is that smart.

The Snap option, being mentioned is in the Edit Sketch side panel, and not needed in this case.

What issue do you have with the SVG file?

You made that pipe from this morning yet?

All the black lines and points are from very unclean SVG file and a Fusion sketch offset.

Might help you get a clean centre line.

You seem fixated on the SVG, or a one click solution, the centreline from this morning not accurate enough?

You mean this image? You're saying this measurement line is perpendicular?? I printed it and checked with a T-square. Definitely not perpendicular.

You mean the offset drawn by @daniel_lyall in the other thread? That was based on a drawn curve, not my graphic. The curve did not even match the curve of my graphic. That screencast taught me how to do an offset, which is great, but otherwise didn't provide any solution for my pipe.

i'm trying to use your T-spline method. That's definitely the best solution offered yet! Thx for that. So i'm trying to figure out how you got your lines precisely halfway between the two edges in my graphic. Did you just eyeball it? I'm trying to find the halfway point by measuring, that's why this thread.

Re your other comments, i'll reply in the appropriate thread. For the sake of not confusing people (myself included), I think it's best to keep threads to one topic, one technique, one skillset, instead of mixing in various topics to the same thread. This topic is about perpendicular measurement. i haven't solved that yet...

My apologies, I thought that you selected two lines in the first picture, but your explanation helps identify that it was two points,

If you do select two lines in that area, then the result is either an angle or a perpendicular measurement,

(was what happened when I tested the file, apparently got two lines that were parallel. Fluked it).

Can you clarify? Perpendicular is an angle.

In my 2nd attempt, i selected 2 lines offset from each other, and did not get a perpendicular.

i don't see the measurement angle displayed anyplace, so how can i know?

i guess the challenge is that the edge is segmented, so there's no way to pick the whole entire edge.

Oop, Ok, point taken,

in your video, the first example, gave you the perpendicular measurement requested,

the second pair of lines are offset from each other and Measure has given the closest point result, in both examples.

When the two lines are not parallel, it's the dimension tool that provides the angle measurement, sorry, had the measure and dimensions mixed up there.

Might clear that up.

My first example in my screencast appears perpendicular to the naked eye, but how can we really be sure?

What if the 2 edges arent directly adjacent, but are close enough that they only appear so?

I realize that's an "edge case" 😄

To be sure you need the Dimension tool, even if only temporary, not Measure.

However, to create the Centre Line, you need construction lines, point to point, then snap to the mid point of the construction lines, you should not need to Measure in that routine.
