Stopping 'Offset Face' from automatically applying an offset amount

Sometimes when offsetting a selected face on a model the Offset Face feature automatically applies an offset straight away. This is often not the offset amount I am wanting. It can be frustrating as Fusion has to calculate it's automatic offset before I can change it. Sometimes this offset is on a complex face and the automatic offset freezes fusion as the calculation is too complicated or not possible to complete without errors. I have had Fusion go into a non responsive state many times because of this, which means I have to force quit and hope that the File Recovery has me covered.

Is there anyway to stop this? Thanks

Thanks for your comment. I think you are right about this. There is now an improvement logged to remove the "remembering" behavior of the command.

The case originally posted here is probably different than what you are experiencing. That case is fixed, but there are different workflows and model geometry involved here. I would need to see your design and test it.

Can you please share a link to a design so I can see what you are experiencing?

The design i was working on is too novel for me to be able to share it, so i checked another file, and there was no problem, the value always came up as zero. So i checked the original design again, and the same, it always came up as zero. I made "sketches" visible in case that made a difference, but no difference, still zero.

I think it was mostly if not entirely giving me the value of the previous offset amount, as a precondition. The amounts were typically or always amounts i had done recently. The recent design is by far the most complex i have created, but it is still only made up of about 25 simple components, and a couple of metres in size. The problem has only happenned when doing that design.

I am still learning and fighting my way through what seem like inconsistencies but somehow there may be background functions operating that i am not yet aware of.........at the same time as the offset issue i had problems where i wouldnt be able to snap to certain lines or objects which made accurate sketching awkward, or select a sketch on a plane for extrusion or similar, without fiddling around and trying all the various options.

I have attached a file in case that reveals anything.

It just happenned again, it autofilled the previous offset face value into a new offset face. Please refer link to video below. Let me know if i can provide more info.

@rhetths -it helps if you use some type of screen casting software (such as autodesks screen cast) because a lot more information than you may realize is captured. In your latest example, you don't have capture history turned on (your in DM mode). That's important b/c some bugs only manifest in one mode or the other.

@Phil.E -this appears to be identical to a previously reported bug (I think you where in that conversation also, but I don't remember right off). It definitely is happening in DM mode , but I'm pretty sure I was able to get it to happen with timeline turned on under certain conditions. It's related to applying offsets to cylindrical objects (either cylinders or fillets). like before, it also seems to apply the diameter from the previous operation to the radius of the new one (ie, doubles it)

to test extrude a cylinder in DM mode, apply an offset of a specific value, repeat.

The original post was about surface offset. This is solid offset, which is a separate command.

The case in DM modeling is known. I'm not sure why there is a difference at this point, but in parametric modeling it starts at "zero" and the offset is +/- that starting point. The existing hole size is irrelevant in this workflow.

In DM, direct modeling (no timeline) the offset command measures the face and shows you the existing radius (and for me it was -1mm each time). So yes, this can be confusing.

But the problem happens in DM space. Once you use the keyboard to enter a value in DM space, it begins to affect Offset in both parametric and direct modeling (DM) workflows. The remedy at that point is to restart Fusion.

Suggestions to work around this:

1. Do not work in DM space. If you are importing models and need to make adjustments, turn on the timeline before you use Offset. That avoids the whole problem.

If you must work in DM space and will likely regularly trigger this regularly, try some other commands.

1. The hole command will operate on an existing hole, by locating to the circular edge. If you need to make holes larger, this workflow will work.

2. To make holes smaller, a sketched circle based on the center of the existing hole will allow you to extrude a small ring of material to make it smaller.

Thanks for the input, this is all added to the bug report now.

Hi again. This week Fusion 360 had a major update to build 2.0.8749. This issue should be fixed in this latest update. Please update Fusion and let me know if you still find the same problem.

Verifying build number:

Help > About
Look for a number like "2.0.8XXX" in the about box.
Current build is 2.0.8749

Updating Fusion 360:

Start or restart Fusion
Look at the Job status icon (the small clock in the top bar)
If an update is downloading a small 1 appears on the clock.
Click to see progress and restart message when it's done.
