In my company, they still work with powershape and they are trying to move to FUSION 360

I usually don't care about part position, all I need is to be aligned how I want.

But what they ask if is possible to align a part/model using function Align but without losing the original origin.

We work with mould cores and cavity, and a lot of insert, our cad department, send all the part in a global position.

Every time I load a part, his origin is always the same.

When I load a part, I need to edit model, create some fixture, input some cylinder to fix FCS ,

But in order to do that, I need to align the part first

Then offset plane, sketch, etc.

But

I upload again a new version of this part, it won't be in the same position.

In powershape they just create multiple workplane in order to help them to create fixtures for FCS

And before upload to powermill or cam software, turn on global positioning and the part will always be same original position.

I thought, should they duplicate the original,

Align the duplicated part to help with fixture, and then, align the duplicated part to the original position?

And derive, is valid?

In fusion,

when you Open a part file it should arrive in a place set by the part alignments out of the PowerMill software.

If you Load / Insert a Part (file) into Fusion, when it comes into Fusion you can set the required position with Move Tool handles / offsets, before accepting this new actual position.

Next step is to Lock the part in place with Rigid Joint.

Align does not Lock anything in place Joints do.

Might help....

I tested this way, it works but seems to many operations

1 open new part, component

2 duplicate

3 align the duplicated part has I want to help build fixture blocks or drill holes fixture.

4 joint the duplicated part to the original one

5 delete the original

This way I can have my part modify and keep the original origin

Is this correct?

Hi,

To avoid misunderstandings, it is better to describe the process in a screencast.
It should also mention which changes are intended.

Have you tried using derive to insert your part into another design where you position and build your fixtures? If you use a joint to position the derived component any updates to the original should update in the derived design or at least be easy to reselect any lost references.

it is hard to figure out what is going on without more info (video, etc). But, one thing to check. When you are using Align, are you sure you are aligning Components, not Bodies. Aligning or Moving a Body will move the body within the component, (away from its origin). Aligning Components will move the entire Component

@nubrandao As you are working with an imported part the body will probably be in the root components so @jeff_strater suggestion will not work unless you convert the body into a component.

Personally I prefer to use derive to create a copy of the part in a new design then use a joint to position the component, a joint will give you more options than align will. You can also create a joint origin if needed to use with the joint if there's no existing geometry in the right place.

When you use the derive option click the top folder in the browser so the derive will create a component in the derived design.
