topic Trouble projecting a sketch to a complex surface in Fusion Design, Validate & Document Forum

The problem that I'm coming across happens when I try to project a sketch onto a complex surface. I'd like for the sketch to project evenly, then I'd like to extrude evenly across the surface, similar to the example attached.

I'm not able to get this to work correctly at all. The best I can do is extrude from the object, which doesn't produce the desired results. I've tried to project to a curved surface and split face but wasn't able to get either of these to work. Split face looks like it might work, but I'm not able to extrude cut certain parts of the sketch. I think that might leave angles in the extrusion even if it worked.

I'm using Fusion 360 for Mac.

I would sketch the profile for the front wall of the cut depth,

same for the back wall, then Loft cut, Front to back,

Might help....

Thanks for answering. I'm not sure how to create a sketch that is complex enough for the loft cut. The actual project I'm working on is not sharable so the sample I provided is showing something similar that I've built for the sake of this question.

I've attached a drawing of the type of sketch I'd need to guide the loft cut. In SolidWorks there are 3D sketches, but I haven't been able to find anything like that with Fusion 360. The sketch needs to curve across multiple planes. If there were a way to do this, I think a loft cut or a sweep could possibly work.

Is this behavior what you're looking for?

Here's the process that I used to create it:

Make a copy of the object you wish to cut into, then translate it downwards by the amount you wish to cut in by.

Then extrude your cutting profile sufficiently deep into the target object (Beyond the cut depth).

Then use the lowered copy to cut into the profile extrusion (Using the combine tool). Lastly, use the remaining portion of the profile extrusion as the final cutter of your original object (Combine tool again). You should be only left with your cut target object.

Hope this helps,

Shihao

That's a really good idea, I'll give it a try and see how it works.
