II'm struggling to create something that seems like it should be easy. I just want to create a rectangular box, create a diagonal edge, then move the opposite vertices downward as shown in the photo below.

I tried using sculpt, but I don't think that is the right approach. I also tried drawing two separate sketches on different sketches planes and using patch, but I couldn't get patch to form faces between the two sketches.

What would be the 'right' way to draw something like this?

Can be done with a splitting plane,

Draw the axis line in a sketch on the top face.

Use the line for a Plane on Angle, my pic is 5 degrees,

Split Body - with the inclined plane as the cutter.

Same for - 5 degrees, etc.

Hide the offcuts or the Remove command.

One way.....

I also have an Idea on it .
You can use a loft command to cut that section . Means first sketch on small length face , the sketch will be triangular and then use loft select the sketch and then the last point , so it will cut the section and you will get , what you want . and again same for other side .

You can also do the Split Body trick with a sketch line as the tool instead of a plane.

Or you can use any other body to Combine>Cut away part of the first body.

Or... well, there are lots of ways to do this.
