Peter,

Model attached.

Slider 9 and Joint 5 are referenced in original post. The white nylon sliders were originally Joint-ed but I have removed a number of joints and all grounding during troubleshooting of this matter. As such, if you move components around they won't hold together - revert needed. I thought it best to send it along in its problematic state.

If you animate Slider 9 (Frame node - Joints) you will see the problem. The red base plate is supposed to move with the slider.

Thanks

Michael

My model is constructed entirely of Components (typically, I will use a subassembly for object structuring). I rigorously follow Rule #1 - create Components in advance and then use them as a Container. Here is my problem:

1. I create a top-level Assembly ("Frame" - under root Assembly for the Project) with the New Component command off the project root

2. I create 2 Component Assemblies under the Frame (so one level down in the tree from the Frame – these are child components to the Frame). These 2 Component Assemblies are called "Longitudinal Sub-Frame" and "Middle Long Sliders". These components were created prior to generating anything into these containers. These 2 Component Assemblies also contain other Components which build up into these 2 Component Assemblies. Routine parametric generation via sketch and rudimentary extrusions. Top down approach – routine tree-based object structure. I use little in the way of Paste New except on some minor “leaf level” components requiring multiple copies. Structure is now this:

Frame

   Longitudinal Sub-Frame

   Middle Long Slider

       Base Plate

The Base Plate is then joined to the Middle Long Slider Component via a Rigid Joint within the Joint Command. I use two points to perform alignment between the two Components (Base Plate and Middle Long Slider). All good so far and they now act as a unit relative one to the other as if they are welded together (i.e. – like a Rigid Group). The Middle Long Slider has now “absorbed” the Base Plate (its child component) into itself – they function like one object when moved around.

3. Timeline normal - no errors/warnings. All looks normal.

4. I then issue a Joint (this time, Slider Joint) to place the Middle Long Slider (to review - comprised of the two Components – Base Plate and Middle Long Slider) into the Frame. The join is made via two edges - one on each component (Frame and Middle Long Slider). The slider drops into place within the Frame without issue. I have confirmed that I am indeed selecting Components by restricting selection with the Selection Filter = Components only. Nothing has been grounded at this point though (but experimentation seems to suggest this is not the issue)

This is where the problem starts – in point 4 … symptoms follow in point 5

5. If I attempt to animate the Slider Joint in point 4, it leaves behind the Base Plate in 3-D space … it is like the Rigid Joint (point 2) no longer exists and the Base Plate no longer moves intact with the Middle Long Slider.

It is almost like the lower level Rigid Joint has somehow been superseded by a Joint (Slider) further up the tree structure.

Not sure what I am doing wrong.

Am I at the wrong level in the object tree? E.g. – the Base Plate should have been made one level up in the tree?Or, something else altogether ?

Win 10; 64 bit ; Build 2.0.4391

I think I know what is going on. Animate Joint only animates the two components directly involved in the joint. Animate Model animates the entire design (as does Drive Joint). Animate Joint does this only as a way to quickly show just that joint, in case your design is large, and performance is slow.

Thank you Jeff (and Peter) for your quick responses.

I was not aware of the joint isolation at that level but makes sense.

Appreciated,

Michael
