Hello All,

I would like to design some Iris mechanisms. There are tutorials online, but they just show how to model one specific version - I would like to figure out a good way to design them in general. My initial thought was to sweep/animate/translate the leafs along a path to get an idea of what kind of movement I need to get no interference.

So far, the only way I have been able to envision the motion (without building an entire mechanism) is by using the pattern along path feature to see where the leaf would end up (See attached video). However, this does not show it at each intermediate step and I am wondering if there is an elegant way with a joint or animation to visualize the motion so I can begin to tune the leafs and arc. Also open to other ideas, thank you

<video-js data-video-id="6360478281112" data-account="6057940548001" data-player="default" data-embed="default" class="vjs-fluid" controls="" data-application-id="" style="width: 100%; height: 100%;"></video-js>
(view in My Videos)

you'll need a motion link to connect how much the leaf rotates out as it travels along the path out.

ideally you would use a pin slot joint on your arc path for this, but pin slot isn't supported for anything but a straight line. instead you'll use 2 components. a pin with a revolute joint so it swings out, and a second (the leaf), that rotates around the pin. then us the motion link to connect how much the leaf rotates as it swings out.-

<video-js data-video-id="6362211872112" data-account="6057940548001" data-player="default" data-embed="default" class="vjs-fluid" controls="" data-application-id="" style="width: 100%; height: 100%;"></video-js>
(view in My Videos)

Thanks for the details. This definitely captures the motion, but what is difficult is that achieving the motion in this way separates the motion from the actual physical geometry in how the leaf and pin would be made. What I am after is being able to edit the physical geometry (leaf and pin and path) and then see the resulting motion. In other words, using motion link disconnects the motion from the physical geometry. Hopefully this makes sense.

no, doesn't make sense. the motion link is only controlling how the leaf rotates as it travels along the path. there isn't any geometry present that would govern that, so I threw in a motion link. and the path is just an arc, easy to change. can you explain what you mean?
