I've create a simplified version based on pyramids and not hexagons. Just to show the general steps:

Create a sketch on the front plane (for the next rows you have to create a offset plane and use this)

Draw a curve to guide the points to define the top part of your hexagon (in my case just a pyramid)

Fix the spline

Create some points on the curve

Dimension the distance between the curve

Unfix the spline, so you can adjust the curve later in the model environment

Finish this sketch

Create another sketch. This time on the ground plane

Project the created points from the previous sketch into the current sketch. This points will define where your base profiles should be placed

Draw your base profiles (in my case a square and the projected point should be the center of the profile).

Dimension and constrain your profiles

Finish the sketch

For each profile create a loft between one base profile and the associated top point

Repeat those steps for each row you want to create. The steps are shown in this screencast:

Hi,

I'm looking to model a hexagon pattern and am having trouble doing so. The hexagons will eventually be 3D printed.

Here are a few images of what I'm looking to create. One image shows the final model and the other is an in-progress shot that shows the base structure.

Modelbeing printed

Would someone be able to outline a procedure or do a screencast I can follow along with?

Thank you!

Create a set of points directly above each triangle. Use multiple sketches or project the points to the surface of a sphere. Use the Loft command to create individual pyramids. Note: You only need to create 1/6ths of them, then use a Circular pattern to complete the model.
