Ellipse dimensions in 2D drawing

I can't seem to be able to put dimensions on an ellipse in a 2D drawing of a 3D model. The dimension tool will not snap to the edges of an ellipse. Any way of doing this?

Hi wmhazzard,

You should be able to dimension the extents of the ellipse by using the Quadrant osnap override on the right-click menu, but is see other dimensions (like distance between foci and radii) are not possible. You may need to manually dimension these values be either creating some sketch geometry in the design and turning it on in the drawing, or using the leader tool and entering values. Not sure if that will satisfy your requirements, please let me know.

what can I do in case that part is not positioned parallel to axis system? My quadrant is away and I do not want to move all components...

@novakLT3XW Think you'll need to create a sketch in the design workspace then make it viewable in the 2d drawing.

strange "solution", really wondering why it is not possible to put the dimension on an oval

This should work now using an aligned dimension and a midpoint snap. After selecting the aligned dimension tool, right click and select midpoint from the snap menu add the first point then repeat for the second.

Here you can see I've added the dimension using midpoints.

It would be really nice to be able to select the foci of the ellipse. But I hvae been able to select the edges of the ellipse with the aligned dimension. Interestingly, it fails to give the correct values on a isometric projection.

Thank you this was just what I needed. I am trying to dimension an oval bottle and was really getting frustrated. Linear dimension worked perfectly!
