Extruding into cylinder after projecting text onto cylinder.

I have a student that wants to 3D print a ring with his initials on it. We projected the initials onto the ring but I can't extrude them into the ring to cut out the text area. File attached, any thoughts? This is my first time doing this.

You can directly extrude that text not the ring if you follow he settings in the screenshot.

In general, however the 1st sketch the defines the size of he ring should dimensioned. The wall thickness of the ring is less than 1mm. That's pretty small.

Also the workflow described in this thread yields but better results.
