Hidden lines in drawing space

I am trying to make hidden lines work in the troubled child of fusion 360, the drawings environment.

I have read the different post regarding this problem on this forum, but not found a solution for my problem.

Attached is a simple drawing (scale 1:1) of a cone. the hole inside the cone should appear as dashed lines, but is obvious solid lines. I draw the cone shape to eliminate two lines laying on top of each other, and in a size where i could have it 1:1 on the drawing sheet.

So the question is, how do i make these lines dashed?

Hey @Anonymous, if you have your view style set to Visible with Hidden Edges then all interior lines (like the hole boundaries here) will be dashed. Here's a sample of what you should be seeing:

Thank you for the reply. The problem is, that I have set the "visible and hidden edges" in the drawing view mode. It clearly shows all edges, but the hidden edges is displayed as solid instead of dashed.

I drew the cone to trouble shoot this problem. I understand from previous treads regarding hidden edges, that there is problems with multiple hidden edges on top of each other.

From my 1:1 cone drawing I conclude the following:

As the hidden edges is visible, the function works. I can turn hidden edges on and off in the drawing view menu. It is a matter of displaying them correctly
As the part and the hole is cylindrical, there is not a case of multiple dashed lines looking as a solid line.
As the drawing is made in 1:1 it is not a dashed line scaled to the extend where it is looking like a solid line.

My initial conclusion is therefore a software issue.

I have made a sketch in the title block editor to demonstrate that my computer is able to display the dashed lines (in case that the graphics is generated by a 3. party service). At my screen those lines appear to be correct.

I have no idea about how you "generate" a dashed line in the fusion software (programming vise), but I have the feeling that the fusion 360 team is trying new approaches (witch i really like). So as I have written elsewhere on the forum, I will gladly help with testing/advising etc. to raise the quality of drawing output.

If it would help, I can share the drawing and part files. I have no idea if it is a local problem with my windows box, a account related problem, or a global problem.

PS: My goal is simply to be able to keep on using Fusion 360 because it is a program I like. A the moment, I (or rather my company) can live without high quality 2D documentation as we are in a development phase and only use drawings internally. But within the next 8-12 months we will need the capability to make proper 2D documentation as we shift towards production.

Thanks for the effort. I can see it works very well for you, but at my system the hidden lines is displayed as solids (see previous posted drawings). Are we looking at some kind of bug caused by unknown system conflicts?

What is your view settings on the 3D part when making this drawing?

When I try to do hidden lines in the Model workspace, they are dashed, but with almost invisible space between the dashes - see the attached picture. Is this how it looks on other systems as well?

A little update...

I have managed to make a drawing with hidden lines. Without testing all possibilities the problem seem to be using custom templates. Can anyone confirm this?

yes, I can!

I have about 8 customTemplates. Just 2 of them (date: > 12.10) are ok.

One works the other does not.

The working template shows a strange behavior.

After inserting the first view, only solid lines are displayed instead of the dashed lines.

Then, when zooming in or out, the dashed lines appear.

This is kind of a odd problem - I wonder why some of @g-andresen templates works and other don't. The first thing that comes to mind is that i have a logo (image file) included in both of my templates.

I will try to make some more template files tomorrow at see if I can spot the problem.

Just a quick follow-up

I have not been able to pin down what elements of a custom title block that causes the problem. But I have come up with 2 work arounds.

As this thread is stranded in limbo, I post the work around and mark the issue as "Answered".

1: THE QUICK FIX

Simply stick to the standard title block in Fusion 360 - it is not the most sexy title block out there, but it gets the work done.

2: Custom Title Block work around

Start the drawing with standard title block - then change the title block to a custom, by importing from DWG. (PS: have not tested this solution, but can not see why it should not work).

Yesterday late night I had the problem again. This time in a template that is working with hidden lines, and actually as a new sheet inside a drawing with multiple sheets. The strange thing is that the other sheets are working just fine (use hidden line view in most of them). The troubled sheet is an exploded assembly view and the trace lines are also displayed as solid(i guess they should be "phantom lines").

Unfortunately, I can not share that specific file, as it contains yet to be patented IP. But I can share the template file if it has any interest.

Would it be possible to duplicate the drawing and replace the model with something generic? Particularly if your drawing has working sheets and broken sheets.

I would love to, but not sure on how to do this - I can not replace the "model" represented on the drawing (changing the part file linked by the drawing file).

Do you have a procedure for what you are suggesting?

Hmm, good question.

The workflow that I was thinking doesn't quite work... but if you private message me the file, you're guaranteed under your contract with Autodesk that we won't share your information except internally, and only then if necessary for support.

Thank you very much for your efforts.

As we nailed down, found this issue reproducible in-house with/without specific data.

This problem start when we (introduce) insert an image to template file.

The problem become persistent though we delete the image from template later.

I have updated the corresponding bug FDWG-10293, we can keep tracking it for the progress further.

I still see the attachment in bug, for which you want to make a note of.

The bug fixing will cover all the concerns raised in the comments of that bug.

In a way just want to assure, we are not losing the focus from original issue.
