Simple Copy and Paste Error

Hello! I am trying to do a simple copy and new paste of a component, and when I do that I get the following error on my timeline:

However, according to my browser the body is still there:

In essence, I'm not sure exactly what this error message is telling me.

Additionally, when I try to edit the sketch in Legs_Long_1 (1):1 component (the one at the bottom of the browser) it sends me to the original sketch even though I have done Paste New.

Any guidance would be appreciated!

It would really help to see your model. The message indicates that your have either deleted a supporting feature or body in the component you are copying and thus the "Cache" geometry statement. Looking at your timeline, do you have any "yellow" colored features? These often indicate where cached geometry is being used. Attach your model so the Forum users can tell you more.

If you do not know how to attach your Fusion 360 model follow these easy steps. Open the model in Fusion 360, select the File menu, then Export and save as a F3D or F3Z file to your hard drive. Then use the Attachments section, of a forum post, to attach it.

You got out of order with your Copy/Paste New process. The video will show what I think you wanted. If done correctly, the Paste New component's sketch will be unique as the video shows. I also mention that I think it is a bad practice to create all your needed components at the first of a design. Create them as you need them, it will keep things more organized and be sure to Activate a component before editing it, both in creating sketches and features. Model is attached.

<video-js data-video-id="6361281022112" data-account="6057940548001" data-player="default" data-embed="default" class="vjs-fluid" controls="" data-application-id="" style="width: 100%; height: 100%;"></video-js>
(view in My Videos)

I came across this post while searching for an answer for a copy-paste sketch issue I have. Your video taught me a much better solution. Thanks for your upload. Now have a question with your method. Let me describe my intend and original problem.

I am designing a three store under desk drawer box and its drawers for 3D printing. As I am new, I try to sketch each component at their final assembly positions. This allows me to toggle bodies of other components on and off and cue me what feature I need to add to current component. As the bottom and middle drawers are exactly same i wanted copy the sketches of bottom drawer to the middle drawer. I chose the second shelf of the box as sketch plane. When I highlight the sketch of bottom drawer, the projected sketch of the box also appears, despite only bottom drawer component is active and rest are "blind". With sketch palete tool i can also turn off the profile and projected geometries which will hide them but once i try to copy with any method they pop up. This is the issue I was searching the forum for its reason and solution.

The three pictures are:

sketch. The sketch i want to copy.

Sketch with profile 2: When i activate the sketch, the background profile appears as well

When copied: Even after turning of profiles and projections, with any copy method this appears and if i paste it, it is pasted this way and makes mess.

NOW QUESTION ABOUT YOUR METHOD.

It is great to be able copy everything and not need to adjust or redraw sketches. Though, when I create this new copy, Fusion automatically place it to the bottom plane and copy/move dialogue box opens but it only allows basic move rotate options. I can not managed to make a sketch plane on the second shelf where it should be placed in final assembly. Once accepting the position Fusion suggested, I can redifine sketch plane for all sketches but sometimes this introduces new problems. When the dialogue boxes is active I can not use align tools either. Aligning components/ parts afterwards caused me problem in the past that i keep it as a last resort.

Thanks for the video and your reply to my question in advance.

Dear John thanks for the reply,

I am uploading the model. Normally, what I do is similar to what you shown in the video and i always had success. This one is the first and it was wierd.

I think I understood when it went wrong. I do not know why and how though. As the bottom drawer was a simple box for the time being, I did not checked carefully. After finishing the component and the handle i realized that that it was in wrong direction in relation to box. Instead of drawer sitting in the box like (=) shape, It was 90 degrees to it (L) shape. I redefined the sketch plane for both Drawer Bottom 2:1 and Handle 2:1 components to sit them on the first shelf. The problem starts with this version of the model. The previous version, before re defining the sketch, there is not problem with the copy function. During redefining planes, the sketch 4 of Shelving Box component is somehow attached to all sketches of other two components. Although the drawer it self is easy to redraw, the handle part has fit point spline which is kind of a freehand draw would be hard to replicate. So i wanted to copy the sketches to ensure they are same.

Instead of copying sketches like this, the copy- paste new component method you described in your prior video seemed much more simpler and and safer. But as in the attached picture, Fusion tries to directly paste it on to the original drawer on the first level shelf. It expects me to manually move it to where ever I want. It is OK for any other project designs but in this project i want the origin points and the parts to be inline with each other. It i manually to move it to the middle shelve (I know the exact distance to move) I am afraid that there might be misalignments. In the past (when I was even more newbee), I also experience problems like bodies dislodged from the sketch and I ended up with two soups of sketches and components which i could not figure out which one belongs to witch. Now i at least try to keep everything much organized.

My question to you in my previous post was, if i could select a starting sketch plane instead of this copy move. The only other way i found redefining plane (again?).

I think you have the knowledge you need to get this job done so I will leave my comments at that.

"Edit Initial Position" Solved the problem. It was not available in the latest versions which the problem I described started to occur. I revert back to the version before the problem, saved it as latest. "Edit Initial Position" became available after that.

I also understood why the sketch of the box bottom stick to the drawer bottom sketch. While redefining the sketch plane the plane was in contact with the upper part of box body. That body was invisible and i did not realized it. Fusion thought that I want them to be included in the sketch too. Putting a bit of offset solved that too.

Once again thanks for your help. No one I know interested in 3D design and 3D printing and i am trying to find my way in the dark alone. Your help is greatly appreciated.
