You don't need an alternative to sweep. At least not for the shape in the screencast.

There reason that isn't working is pretty obvious.

The radius of the concave section of the path you are sweeping the profile along on is smaller than than the biggest dimension of the profile perpendicular to the sweep path so the geometry would penetrate/mntersect itself.

Fusion 360 does not allow that and complains about self intersection.

You either need to make the radius of the path in that area bitter or the profile smaller or a combination of both.

Another alternative is to use a sweep with guide rail and have the swept shape shrink/stretch to fit between the swept path and the guide path.

Alternatives to sweep

I keep running into errors with simple uses of sweep:

Error: The body would intersect itself.
Try reducing the taper angle, or removing regions of high curvature from the profile.

Error: The sweep could not create a valid body. Try changing the profile or path, or adjusting the operation values.

Error: The sweep would create an illegal surface.
Try changing the profile or path.

Using sweep would by far be the easiest way to create what I am looking for by making a sketch of the cross section of the object I want (profile) and the path I want it to follow (closed/connected splines). The only paths that seem to work use splines that are very simple and do not mix both concave and convex curves. In the attached example, the sweep can only be done on the outside curve of the path, and fails if taken any further. I have more complex paths I would like to use, but just provided this as an example.

What alternatives are there to sweep for creating such shapes?
