When I started my document (a box with a cover) I didn't create any components and I created a part of my object (box).

After it I created a new component (cover) and created another part of object inside it.

Now I want to move first part into a separate component.

I created new empty component, moved it to the beginning of the timeline, but how can I move features of first part (box) into it?

Why didn't you create new components for BOTH the box and its cover before you started sketching and modeling them?

Move the timeline marker to after the first sketch, now look at the Browser and drag that sketch into the component. Then move the timeline marker to the right one even, and check to see if the body got created in that component or not, and if not, drag it in there also. Continue this process until all of the boxes steps are in the component.

Then move the marker all the way back to the right. And don't make any more mistakes like this. Ever.

Why didn't you create new components for BOTH the box and its cover before you started sketching and modeling them?

It's my first production model. Now I know that I have to do it.

and drag that sketch into the component. Then move the timeline marker to the right one even, and check to see if the body got created in that component or not, and if not, drag it in there also. Continue this process until all of the boxes steps are in the component.

Thank you. I did it, but now all features are in the first component. I moved the sketch from ex-second component back to second component, but now I can't drag features like [Q - extrude] back to it.

I believe that three of the model sketches are shared between the Box and the cover so they cannot be move under either component and must remove in the top level. I have attached the model where you have two distinct components so you can move forward. From this point on, be aware of keeping your bodies and sketches segregated. My modified model is attached

@chrisplyler has provided a good explanation.

I would add that in this case where the box and the lid are not only sharing sketches, but features, the strict separation between components is not necessarily the most efficient way to design this.

I have attached another design where both, the top and the bottom are bodies and stay that way until all the interface geometry between the two has been defined.

For 3D printing I would also design to nominal dimensions, so no clearances are defined. Then at the end I would offset surfaces to define clearances and only then I would add decorative fillets and chamfers to the geometry.

Another thing that differs from your design is that I am taking advantage of symmetries. So I start the design with a center point rectangle so I can later mirror features.

If you can avoid mirroring in a sketch you should do it.

For anyone reading this now, I understand the question has been answered but it didn't seem obvious to me how to do this so I will explain what I did here.

I accidentally started just creating sketches and bodies in the top level of the Fusion model, rather than in a component, so to rectify this I created a new component then selected all sketches in top level of the tree, and click+dragged all the selected sketches into the new component in the tree. The bodies seemed to magically follow.

Everyone appears to address this issue by stating that its a mistake to not preconcieve the hierarchy up front, and then populate it. Shouldn't it be possible to reorganized the hierarchy of the design while working? I don't appear to be able to drag sketches and their extruded bodies into a newly created, but created earlier on the timeline than them, sub-component? Why wouldn't such an re-organizational process be permitted? Like almost every complex design effort its all about properly managing and organizing complexity, but fusion 360 doesn't appears to encourage, or even allow, converging to improved organization?!.
