@laughingcreek thanks for the pointer. However, there is one subtlety here: Fusion distinguishes an "expression" from an "equation". An expression is just a math phrase that can be evaluated statically. An equation is a math phrase that includes a reference to another parameter. The "fx:" is only shown for equations.

expression:

Fusion 2.0.20256 x86_64 [Native]
macOS 13.6.9 (22G830) on MacBookPro15,3

This keeps happening and it is HORRIBLE. I try to double-click on a sketch dimension and it will not let me edit the value. But I can click on some others and edit those. It is happening to me randomly a lot in the past week.

It keeps happening and NO, it's not the sketch being too complicated, it's BASIC sketch dimensions, I'm not doing anything crazy here. If I toggle and un-toggle Driven then sometimes I can edit it. Sometimes if I click enough other dimensions I can go back and it will let me change the value. Sometimes I have to delete the dimension and add it again, only then can I dimension it! Unpredictable! 🙂

please share the design and a video (or point out an example of a dimension you cannot edit).

Possible causes:

you are editing one sketch, and the dimension is in another sketch

the dimension is a driven dimension, which cannot be edited

Ah yes, to clarify my comment about "No Gaslighting Please!": Often, when a user posts a real problem with Fusion on this forum, somebody (frequently a votary) will immediately respond that the user is wrong, they're using the program wrong, implying that nothing is really wrong with Fusion, and that the user's problem does not exist. Did Günther literally say that? No. Tacitly implied? Unknown, but I felt the need to remind that I have tagged this post No Gaslighting Please!

I posted a video of the problem I am experiencing, with the file, and you are telling me that the problem isn't replicable by you (or Günther)... so .... are you saying the problem doesn't exist? Do you suppose I am... not experiencing an issue? Perhaps I am not using Fusion correctly? Can you point out where in my screencast I went wrong?

Thank you for your time!

Hi,

I would take you to task about forum members telling you they get some problem that you have to work on their

machines. This is not telling you your problem does not exist, what it is telling you is that there is something

different in what you are doing or your setup. This is a valid engineering troubleshooting method and narrows down

the issue to your system or setup. If others can reproduce the problem then it may be an actual software bug or

configuration setting.

I would also take you to task for calling one of the leading problem solvers on the forum a "votary".

a devoted follower, adherent, or advocate of someone or something.

This is fairly rude implying that those with knowledge greater than yours are somehow inferior to you.

The whole reason the forum exists is to help people learn and use fusion better and for the devs to get valid

feedback for improvement. There are those who are new and learning and do not have the skills and knowledge to

work their own problem; there are those who are experienced who offer to help; and there are those in between.

It is a work together ecosystem and the moderator stomps on anyone who becomes abusive or deliberately tries

to belittle others.

One of the three RULES pinned to the top of the forum is RULE #0. I think you need to read all of them but that one

in particular. The Gurus in this forum try to help others and you should respect they have more knowledge than you

do sometimes and if they point out certain things they are doing so to help. Sometimes you need to be humble and

accept that help even if you don't like what they say.

Cheers

Andrew

I in no way intended to say that the problem does not exist. I am pretty sure that @g-andresen, also, did not intend to say that. Neither of us intended to imply (and did not say) that your workflow is wrong. Merely, that this problem is more complex than you might have realized. While I realize that the fact that neither of us are able to reproduce the problem is not helpful to you, that information is very helpful to the Fusion team, and therefore, IMO, is a valid response here.

I am not sure how to proceed. Hopefully it is obvious to you that the development team cannot fix a problem that they are unable to reproduce. So, the question for us is: what is different between your system or installation or preferences, or cache, etc and ours? There must be some difference. If we can determine that, we can fix this, either in your system or in Fusion itself. To the best of my knowledge, we have never seen this problem before. So, anything you can do to help us determine what that difference is would be helpful

Hello Andrew,

I do not wish to task any volunteers to try to solve bugs. I'm not asking for help, I am reporting an annoying issue. I was inspired to post this bug after the Tool window sticking over other windows in MacOS was fixed in the most recent update (if they fixed that long-time issue perhaps more generous fixes are ahead? Like being able to edit a dimension in a sketch?)

Your definition of the purpose of this forum has led me to a wonderful discovery. I JUST realized that I posted to the wrong forum! I need to be using the Support forum. I've repeatedly asked where to report bugs and only now, after your definition and reference to your own post of the rules of this forum, do I realize that is not at all the purpose of this forum, lol. Thank you!

Okay thank you. Not sure what more I can do to help narrow down this issue.
Probably best for me personally to use a different CAD program and import
them in, lol.

I noticed something else interesting about the file you uploaded. dimensions that have any kind of formula in them should be preceded by an "fx:" indicating such to the user (to be clear, fusion adds the fx, not the user). for some reason fusion isn't doing this in your model-

@jeff_strater - since this is happening after being exported and opened on a machine that has everything else working, maybe the OP's model will be helpful to the developers after all?

for reference, when I put a formula in a new sketch/model on my machine, I get the fx prefix-

@laughingcreek thanks for the pointer. However, there is one subtlety here: Fusion distinguishes an "expression" from an "equation". An expression is just a math phrase that can be evaluated statically. An equation is a math phrase that includes a reference to another parameter. The "fx:" is only shown for equations.

expression:

Hello, Please see attached video showing a simple sketch where the dimension can't be edited, but when I move it to a different place it can be, and when I move it back it can't. There is NOTHING special about this sketch, what you see is it.

Not obvious until someone tells you, make the browser smaller, or move the dimension out from under the invisible browser window.

You're not the first to get caught with this.

Might help...

Something that strikes me as odd is that the very fist sketch, which is also the very first feature in the timeline has purple geometry in it!

Purple sketch geometry is projected geometry, which is still linked to the original object (edge or other sketch geometry from another sketch) it was projected from.

However, it being the first feature in the timeline there is no 3D object or other sketch that it could have been projected from, so how did that get there?

That is before I have even edited the sketch to look at how it is constrained and dimensioned.

Edit: That same purple geometry is part of every sketch in the design, but apparently it can be deleted without causing a problem. Unfortunately we don't have "link inspector", or a tool that would allow us to see what the projection is linked to.
