topic Micro-lattice structure part doesn't load into Fusion 360's "simulation" in Fusion Design, Validate & Document Forum

Hi,

I have created a part with microscopic lattice structures (to induce porosity) on Netfabb. When I import it to Fusion 360 "Design", it imports well. But I try to load it into "Simulations" to perform some stress analysis, the part just disappears. It is there when I toggle back to "Design". How can I perform some stress analysis on microscopic lattice structures?

Santhosh Suresh

You cannot simulate that. At least not in Fusion 360 and I doubt in many a common FEA software.

The basis of most FEA systems is to create a volumetric tetrahedral mesh of the solid objects in your design. I magian hoe fine a mesh of your micro array would have to be in order to get any meaningful results.

It would also likely require rather large computational resources.

Hi @TrippyLighting ,

Thank you for your reply. I agree with what you had mentioned. Will it be feasible on Nastran if I were to use a High-Performance Computing Virtual Machine? Or what would your suggestions be? I initially thought: Since I had done some mechanical tests on the printed lattice, I'd create a new material with those properties and assign them to the parts that are porous (but this time, they are intentionally designed dense). Not sure if this would give the best representation. What do you think?

Santhosh Suresh

This would require deeper expertise in FEA and Nastran then I can provide. However, I doubt that you can get this simulation done through Fusion 360. Fusion 360 only exposes a sub-set of Nastran and what you want to do is such a specializes case that it is likely out of scope for Fusion 360's abilities at the current time.
