Hi there,

I just created a new design and within this design only, I get some strange behaviour. When I press the shortcut "E" for extrude, it automatically selects a random surface on a sketch to extrude. Even though the sketch is not visible and I've made sure the face isn't selected, Fusion will select it. I can simply deselect it to extrude a different face, but it's rather annoying. Please see the screencast and notice the keyboard presses

I looked through the preferences and couldn't find anything on this. Have I clicked on something on accident to turn on this behaviour or is it a bug?

I did some further work on it, and it stopped doing the autoselect. However, when I opened the v1 through the history, it still had the error

Hi,

that does look a little strange indeed.
Especially the dependence on the behaviour of the 1st sketch is irritating.

strange profile selection behavior
Maybe @jeff_strater or @Phil.E should take a look at this?

günther

The logic here is: If there is one visible sketch, and if that sketch contains one profile, Extrude will auto-select that profile. It's not random at all. This was added as a productivity enhancement a while ago, for the fairly common workflow of: create a sketch, draw a single profile, then immediately extrude it. Customers were annoyed at having to pick the profile, when there is an obvious choice. Personally, it didn't bother me at all to have to pick a profile, but, whatever. If there are two sketches visible, or if there are more than one profile, then the choice is not obvious, so Fusion doesn't auto-select anything.

The one logic error exposed here is that the sketch in this design is not truly "visible". It is marked visible itself, but the sketches folder is not. That is a minor bug, I agree.

I understand the enhancement/logic, but as @jeff_strater pointed out, there's a bug in that it selected a specific face no matter if that sketch (or any other sketch for that matter) was visible.

I tried reproducing it. The bug is simply that when a sketch is visible but the "Sketches" folder is not visible, it will auto-select the profile (even though nothing is visible on-screen).

The bug continues, but in a different way: When you have a component isolated, if there is an errant sketch somewhere in the full project that's still visible, the extrude tool will grab that profile. Even though the entire component that the sketch exists in (as well as everything but the active component) has been hidden.

At least I know what's causing the bug now, but it is still pretty annoying. I'm a "worst practices" type of drafter, in that I usually have multiple profiles in each sketch, so it's taken me a while to figure out why this happens to me.
