How to change body name from configuration table

Hello!

I'm am facing a certain change where I'd like to change the name of the body or the component based of the configuration used.

I use the configuration table... a lot! This feature is insanely perfect for me. But because I do 3D printing a lot it is hard to keep the naming scheme accurate and fail-safe. Meaning. My component name is basically "bottombox" but this box has 10 to 20 different options. so there might be a lot more letters next to Bottombox. I want those options to reflect the configuration name in the body or component.

Configuration name: bottombox_60 change the body name also to bottombox_60. So when I export this body into an STL it would at least have the right name and if already exist would replace the file with the proper one.

This would save me a ton of time as well as save me the hasle in case I change the wrong item.

Any advise or even a better way ? Thank you very much all for your time.

I'm glad you like Configurations! 🙂 We put a lot of hard work into it, so it's great to hear you enjoy it.

When you are exporting for 3D Printing, are you using right click - 3D print on the component/body?

I think currently the only way to get the Configuration Name to auto-fill when exporting would be to use File - export Active Configuration, but obviously this will export the entire design rather than just the particular body or component.

I can think of a few ways we could improve this - one would be to allow you to Configure the body/component name (which might allow for more flexibility down the road), and one would be to include more naming options/logic in the 3D print dialog.

Configuration is a fantastic way for me to manipulate a lot of different options for my product with ease. I can show them in real time the different options we offer.

Here is the answer to your question.

99% of the time, I export to STL using the right click on the body. This allowed me to ONLY export the actual 3d printing parts without all the other components attached to it, such as screws, inserts or connectors.

Having the possibility to rename a specific body and component via the configuration table would be a terrific feature. I would definitely pay for that.

Just a +1 that this would be an essential feature. I was lead to this thread looking for it. What good is the name of the configured component in the table if it isn't actually the name of the configured component!!!??

I filled 2 or 3 feature requests. I suggest you do the same to have more chance of it happening 🙂 I would pay for such feature but this is not an option at autodesk haha
