Hi all,

I have a part that needs two 1/2"NPT threads, and it will be printed on an SLA printer. The thread tool has a "modeled" option which works, but I do not see a "modeled" option for the hole tool when "thread" is selected. I'm not using the thread tool because NPT is _still_ not available there.

The browser "modeled threads" option is enabled.

Thanks for any help!

To answer 1 of your remarks: the hole function can provide you with a modeled tapped hole - however, to reach the checkmark for the option "Modeled" you may need to scroll the option box down, though... it's at the bottom. On my screen, it's not visible either - I also need to scroll to reach it. Maybe you missed that?

As for the missing NPT option: that's indeed dearly missed,

Hope this helps a bit. 🙂

Fusion can not generate tapered threads at all unless you want to model them.

What you could try is use McMaster Carr from the insert menu and download a part with a thread in it or use a plug. Using a plug will not really give the correct thread form but might do.

I found this cap, you should be able to combine it with your part.

I've struggled with NPT threads in the past too - but your suggestion to use a standard plug as cutting tool is a most welcome work-around: it gets the job done.

Hi Harry,

I do not see such an option within my settings:

If it's not too much trouble on your end, could you screenshot what you see?

HughesTooling, I have used a plug as a negative in the past, but you're at the mercy of the manufacturer at that point... I'd prefer to model them manually before that. These SLA printers are surprisingly precise, so you can get usable threads out of them.

EDIT: Also, the modeling option within the hole tool should be superseded by the browser toggle, no?

The browser option is just a quick way to toggle all threads in the design as in a big design you would not want modeled threads while working on the design. You can still override the document setting for individual hole features.

Also, as I said Fusion does not create modeled taper threads from the hole or thread tool.

No, you're completely right: the checkmark isn't showing for NPT threads, that option is not available. As I said, NPT is dearly missed.
Not sure what you mean, I was stating Fusion can't generate modeled taper threads (Thread and Hole feature), as far as I can see it can't. From what I can see the thread feature can't produce any tapered threads, modeled or cosmetic. The hole feature can produce tapered cosmetic threads but that's it. Think the tapered hole created by the hole tool is the correct core size for the thread and can be used in the manufacture workspace as a reference for thread milling.

Don't know if you've thought of this. If you're modeling the thread yourself you could create a plug in a separate design then insert it and combine cut so you don't need to model every time.

Agree, cutting and gluing with pieces of McMaster-Carr fittings is not an elegant practice, while modeling the taper and the spiral is a huge drag on the human and a perfect task for a computer.

Bumping. It's been years. Still no NPT option! Pretty sad to not have such a common feature. I don't know if it's laziness driving no change or it's a fundamental flaw in their software. Either way it's not a good look for the fusion 360 team.

I was trying to model a npt thread this week yo 3d print a prototype but as gheres no feTure to model a thread I've been having to tap my 3d prints. What's not really what I want ho be doing as it adds another process to my prototyping

You could use parts of McMaster-Carr fitting step file, as a tool or a
piece of your model. This will not give you a correct model of the thread
but is probably close enough for 3d printed parts.
