Project to Surface not working... watched all the videos.. still not working

About to pull my hair out.

I go into my sketch, select Project to Surface. I immediately get the menu asking which faces and curves I want to use. I don't get this odd moment that I've seen in all the videos where I select a origin plane as reference BEFORE this menu pops up. Maybe that's the issue. Also, maybe that's a really poor way to configure the UI.

Regardless, the end result is that I end up with this infuriating warning / error:

Not sure how I can be following all the instructions and still get it wrong!

Pretty simple stuff.

yep, simple stuff. ( 2 separate sketches one is source (2d), and one is your current sketch)

Will get to the file a little later, there are no 3d surfaces in your photo.

Think of drawing a waterline on a bowl, that’s what the Project To Surface does, but there are other ways to do that, too.

I took 3D to mean a modeled part...

So how do I project the sketch to a "not 3D part, but a modeled part"?

That would be Project > Project, or P on the keyboard.

Project is a sketch tool, so only works in a currently open sketch.

You pic shows, You have a horizontal sketch, you have projected the brace and upright into that sketch. Normal behaviour so far.

When I get to the file, what do you want to do?

@engineer1984 I think what you are looking for is Intersect rather than Project to Surface.

Project to surface doesn't fall as you really wanted - I added more sketch features to show you where the sketch line actually lands on. Then second thing is that there is a limit to the location of the lines (they were touching the edges of your shape and I could only make the projection with shapes contained by the selected face - the source for the error you got) :

If I understood you correctly you wanted the tube (two squares) projected onto the surface of the slanted square tube. I created a geometry that intersects with your slanted tube based on the sketch (horizontal sketch) and then created a sketch on the slanted face of the tube and used the Intersect command to make the geometry of the body that intersects with the sketch become sketch lines 🙂 :

Hmmm...

My ultimate desire is to have two linked components for both uprights (Qty 2 on a BOM). I need to locate those 1" x 1" uprights off the respective upright posts. I want that distance to be 3" horizontally from the upright posts vs some calculated amount (using a leg of a triangle) so that I could change it from 3" to something else meaningful.

My thought was to use project off a horizontal sketch to achieve this... maybe there's another way to do this. The way your describing works well if I want two completely different components. Just use extrude from each sketch and create a new body.

Also, can't you project in one direction vs the projection that Fusion gives you by default? That's an option into the project onto surface, at least.

So you want to Joint the bar on the rail, at a spacing from the post. Yes I would use a sketch for that. Check the end of the timeline.

I made sketch 6 in the top of the file and it is on a (mid)plane of the bottom rail.

Project the bottom rail top face with Intersect, and the face of the post at the same time.

dimension the variable post distance line, and make it coincident to the inclined rail.

Use the end point of the black line and a midpoint of the bar edge, for the joint.

Changing the line dimension will move the bar along the rail.

Thanks for your efforts! I didn't do exactly what you did,but you inspired me to figure out my solution, which was to just use two different sketch planes to cross.

I do wonder why we can't use the construction plane as an intersection point. I just wanted to draw a line showing where the construction plane intersected w/ a body. On the other hand, I suppose the location of a construction plane isn't very easy to change, so it probably doesn't allow the dwg to be parametric.

I also think that the Project tool could have been very nice in this case, if I could choose it to be X, Y, or Z direction of project.

It would have saved me a lot of thought as it seemed the most natural way for me to solve the problem.

Couple of points - items in the Construction menu, are not usable sketch Geometry, until you project them into a sketch (if that’s needed). Construction Planes are editable with Edit Feature.

Redefine sketch plane should be avoided, creates nightmares, but moving / editing the plane is a different and simple matter.

Sure place the sketch plane where where you want the line, and we all use Project > Intersect,

Fusion draws the penetrating shape of the selected article.

Do you want the modeled feature - on only the path centerline for CAM?
