topic Interpreter Services in FlexSim Forum

[ FlexSim HC 5.1.0 ]

Whats the best way to model interpreter services? Should I just add a staff member to an activity track? I would like to capture 40% of patients moving through the space as requiring an interpreter , so I'm thinking that maybe attaching a patient label, or something?

Basically, a patient (spanish speaking, for example) will check in, be assigned an interpreter, and have that resource follow them for most of the engagement.

Here is a sample model showing one way you could do this. I've put the logic into the staff requirement fields of activities 11, 21, and 31. Activity 11 is setting the staff requirement using the Based on a Condition pickoption where I check if the patient has a 1 on their interpreter label. Activities 21 and 31 use the Used in Earlier Activity option, but I had to open the code editor and add a check for the interpreter label.

If you want the staff to actually follow the patient around when they walk places you'd need to use escort activities and have the interpreter escort the patient which would mean you'd probably need two different activities depending on if they need an interpreter. If they do you'd have an escort activity and a travels unattended activity if not. Although, if another staff member is already escorting the patient you could just add another conditional staff requirement.
