What exactly is getstream()?

I'm new to FlexSim and trying to get a handle on some things for school. I've done some digging and still not understanding...what exactly is "getstream()" and "getstream(current)"? Why are they used? What makes them important? A stream seems necessary for my simulations to run properly...but why and what is it?
