topic ACES on a REC709 Monitor in Flame Forum

I'm getting some footage (Open EXR sequence) that was color corrected in ACES color space and need some advice on how to set up my output of FLAME to view ACES on a REC709 monitor. Where do I find the LUT or the Color Transform for the output and how should I go about doing that. I watched the Flame Learning Channel video with Grant about setting up my project in ACES but am still a bit fuzzy on the whole workflow. Any advice or pointers would be greatly appreciated!

Hi djsmoke,

All of this can be initially set up in the Colour management preferences.

You use the input rules to define what colourspace the material will be. So as an example, it is ACES2065-1. Importing the EXRs will be tagged as ACES2065-1.

Next, you use the viewing rules to define how the material will be displayed once it is correct tagged with a colourspace (from the input rules). So in the viewing rules, you create a rule to view an ACES2065-1 tagged clip.

For example, you would create a new rule. Firstly, you choose the View Transform. In the ACES output, you would choose the appropriate transform for your material. When you do this, it also chooses the Allowed Colour Space. This means that only material tagged as ACES2065-1 will be able to use this viewing transform. You can edit the settings if you want. Under Allowed Displays, depending on what viewing transform you chose, it will define what display/device this transform can be showed on. Setting this to ANY will allow every device to access this viewing transform but you can refine the viewing rule to a specific device if required.

Finally, to the left of the preferences, you have the Monitors heading. For your broadcast display, you would set your broadcast colour space of the device. This is connected to the allowed displays in the viewing rules. You would set it to REC-709 or the specific monitor that you are using to see the broadcast output. Through the defined viewing rules and monitor definition, Flame should work out the correct transforms and the ACES will be displayed on your REC-709 monitor.

Just be advised that the colours may differ slightly because you are effectively truncating a huge ACES gamut into a tiny REC709 gamut.

Hope this helps! Please hit the Accept as Solution button if my post fully solves your issue or answers your question.

Regards

Grant

Thanks for this Grant, very useful here too.

Just upgraded from 20.17.1 (I know) to 2018.3 and there seems to be a new drop-down option in Prefs > Colour Management > Monitors. Below Broadcast Colour Space and Graphics Colour Space there is now also Monitoring Colour Space.

i can't find any explanation of it and no tooltip appears. Any idea what this controls?

Thanks

Hi -cicero,

We updated the scopes in Flame 2018.3. Because Flame can work in a colour managed environment, it is important that the scopes are colour managed as well. The "Monitoring Colour Space" defines what colour space the scopes should be monitoring. The broadcast and graphics options should still work the same as before.

These monitoring settings are tied to the scopes and their relevant viewport. So if you change the view transform, it should also update the scope when you look at it in that viewport.

Great, makes sense now. Cheers Grant.

Might be worth re-labelling it as Scopes Colour Space or similar for future releases, to avoid confusion with other monitoring devices!
