OK, so you're saying the CentOS updater should never be run. That's fine, however in reality, when this system is in a client's hands, they are going to probably end up running the updater regardless of if I warn them not to do it out of habit. Is there an Autodesk recommended, software oriented way of preventing this? To me, it seems like if there isn't, it's a predictable accident waiting to happen.

Hello,

I setup Flame workstations for a number of our clients, so I am very comfortable with the whole process, going back to 2018 when it was a bit more complicated.

We just setup an HP Z8 that meets all the hardware requirements. We installed Autodesk's CentOS 8.2. After doing the OS installation, I ran the update tool for CentOS and after the updates completed and I restarted the system, it has upgraded to 8.5. This had me a little concerned because from past experience, Flame tends to be a bit rigid in its requirements, but I'm not sure if that's still the case.

I then installed the DKU (which mentioned we're not running on a Flame compatible OS since it's 8.5 now and not 8.2) and that went through fine. I then installed Flame 2022 Trial and that installed fine as well.

So my question is:

1. Will the system be fine at 8.5?

2. In general, if it's supposed to be strictly on 8.2, how do I prevent myself or a client from running the update tool which will inevitably make it upgrade to 8.5? Is there some sort of official measure in place to prevent that from happening?

Thank you,

Jonathan

You should never run OS updater since you enter in a non supported configuration.
I would recommend to go back to CentOS 8.2.

If they run into issues with the application running on a non supported OS, we will not be able to help.

As we know, CentOS 8 is now EOL since last December and we will disclose soon our strategy for replacement OS. They should wait and use CentOS 8.4 until we provide more information.

You can create restricted shell access. Best practice is to not let end users use yum and treat Flame like an appliance. Even if they are installing trivial applications this can break dependencies. I'm not aware of any Flame artist who executes a CentOS update out of habit.

https://access.redhat.com/solutions/65822
