Hello,

I have the free version of eagle 9.6.2 and I am having this same problem. I began my day being able to move components, then I add a few to the design and now I cannot move any. If I open an different project, I can move the components there. I have tried moving the board edges to the origin to solve this problem. But I do not know how to solve it. Any suggestions?

Sincerely,

Kepa

Hi,

I just upgraded to Eagle Standard because I needed a larger board size. I loaded my design, expanded the size of the board and was starting to move everything where it needed to be. I got interrupted so I saved the file and now after opening it I can't move any components without an error message. This includes components that were where they belonged in the initial design. So I opened another file that hadn't been saved and it is working fine. What the heck did I screw up? BTW I checked the t and b Origins layers and they are on.

Thanks in advance,
Ken Dabek
West End Recording

Hi Ken,

Thanks for participating. Where are the components in your design located? EAGLE enforces it's area limitation by requiring that the board be placed in the positive X and Y axes relative to the origin. Look at your design and find the absolute origin (0 0) copper is not allowed below or to the left of that point. If you try to move components into those areas you will get the error message.

If this still doesn't solve your problem then post a screenshot and I can have a better look. Thank you for mentioning that you checked the origins layers that would have been the first thing to check.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you.

Please accept as solution if my post fully resolves or you issue, or reply with additional details if the problem persists.

Best Regards,

Did you ever get this solved? I'm having the same issue. I moved some parts onto the board and saved. Now I can't move the rest of the parts onto the board. Using 9.1.3 with a standard license here.

When I try to move with my mouse and click, it just does nothing. Won't let me place the part, but doesn't give an error. Trying to move by manually entering coordinates brings up a window that says

"The standard edition of EAGLE can't perform the requested action! Some objects extend outside the allowed board area. Click here to upgrade"

The problem is that I can't seem to move the parts into the allowable board area.

Turns out I was able to fix this by moving all of the parts onto the board in Fusion 360 and then pulling my design back into Eagle. This seems like a pretty big bug.

Hi @Anonymous,

Take a look at your selection filter, make sure to click the reset button. You want everything to be available for selection.

That's not what's happening. I can select the part just fine and I can move it just fine. So I move the newly added part onto an existing board I made a couple of months ago and no amount of clicking will place the part, there's no error message or anything, it just waits for me to click-to-place but won't place on click.

I found if I click and drag it will then try to place but then it shows the error that I have to place inside the board area, which is what I'm doing. Keep in mind this is an existing board from just a couple of months ago and already has many parts on there just fine.

To make things stranger, if I try to move an existing part that was already placed on the board it does the same behavior. It can no longer be placed anywhere, once I pick it up it cannot be placed anywhere, not even in it's original location. Furthermore, like above, I can click all day long but it continues to be held. I have to click and drag before Eagle will try to place it and then, even in the original spot, Eagle will complain that it has to be placed in the board area.

So at this point the board and project are completely unusable and I'm locked from doing anything or making any progress on the project. I have to stop for the rest of the day and do something else. I've been searching Google for hours and nothing I've tried works.

Hello @Anonymous,

I hope you're doing well. Find where your origin is, your board outline should be to the right and up of the origin. Components can only be moved into the positive X and Y axes. If you are trying to move them anywhere else it won't work.

What size of entitlement do you have? It's definitely something to do with the board size limitations.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you.

Best Regards,

From what I can tell the board is at 0,0. The size is also correct. No parts are moving although I tried all of the above suggested solutions.

Choose move icon the when I click the color change (meaning that the part is recognised), I am able to use rotate but the part moves off the board and cant be placed back onto the board after the rotation.

Hang in there. First, be sure you have the layout starting in the origin and only going to the right and up, in other words, only in positive coordinates. Then be sure your layout size doesn't exceed what your version allows. I was very frustrated at first, now it's second nature. Although, creating a part or modifying a part is still messy for me.

There is one nice feature I just found out about. For the standard edition, the maximum area of components is limited to 160cm^2. However, the overall area of the board is not! So, you can have a larger board that can include holes for standoffs, more silkscreen, other physical features as long as none of these items are associated with the schematic.

Hello Jorge,

you mentioned that components can only be placed in the positive coordinate area because of licence limitations?

We often work with small boards with round outline that are for good reason centred to the origin - to simplify placing components on distinctive coordinates. This was always possible also with board size limit of 160x100mm - eagle was never bound to positive coordinate range.

I must admit this as a serious bug that causes a lot of trouble and makes eagle9 useless for continuing older designs.

Board size limit should be applied to the difference (xmin-xmax) and (ymin-ymax) coordinates or maybe the area entangled by the outline but not force anybody to move centroid design from the past.

We often work with small boards with round outline that are for good reason centred to the origin - to simplify placing components on distinctive coordinates. This was always possible also with board size limit of 160x100mm - eagle was never bound to positive coordinate range.

You are mistaken. The standard license has never allowed components to be placed at negative coordinates.
