hi

i tried this:

In the control panel if your right click on the top level "Libraries" folder in the tree and choose "Open library manager" and then in the "Available" tab you can select all the managed libraries and then click the "Delete" button.

Delete button ? you mean remove button ?

No, I mean the delete button! On the right hand side just above Edit. Select any managed libraries which are present on the disk and you wish to remove (note, if you do a group selection and it contains a library which isn't downloaded it greys out the delete button!) and then click 'Delete'. They are physically removed from your disk and will not re-appear (until you install a new version of EAGLE and the pesky installer puts them back).

All you did was remove them from use which is why they re-appeared when you restarted EAGLE. Note also that if you were using a project, the project stores which libraries are in use and which are not. The default is to use everything present.

Best Regards,

Can I remove Managed Libraries from EAGLE entirely?

I don't use the EAGLE supplied libraries at all and previously I just set the library path to point only to my own in house libraries and not the EAGLE supplied ones and I never saw them again in any window and could just go and delete all the default libraries that I didn't need.

Now it seems, with the new Managed Libraries feature, I cannot get rid of the Managed Libraries folder from the Control Panel view. The best I can do is make sure none of them are in use and then they don't show up in the schematic editor but I would like to be able to remove the whole lot and disable this new feature as I don't want these libraries being squirrelled away taking up space in a buried location and I don't want them cluttering up my control panel.

Can I completely get rid of this? If not can we have a config option somewhere to disable this please?

Many thanks,

Rachael

There's not currently a way to remove the Managed Libraries, although it's on our list of things to do. There are a few different things this could mean and we need to figure out which one(s) to implement:

A way to disable the managed libraries feature completely. Note that in the future we hope to supply libraries from many different sources using the managed libraries system, so this might not be the right approach if what you really want is #2.

A way to not install / remove / hide the standard Eagle libraries. That is, have a way of getting rid of the bundled Eagle libraries (as you could in previous Eagle versions by removing them from the library path) but still allow the downloading and use of other managed libraries.

A way to stop the managed libraries from being placed in use by default and/or to stop them from being searched when a library name is specified, but still allow them to be used on demand as needed.

A way to remove individual managed libraries, which would also allow for the selection and removal of all the standard Eagle libraries.

Any thoughts or feedback on these various options?

Hi Rachel,

Eventually we would like to extend the manage libraries feature to allow anyone to publish their own libraries and to choose who to share those libraries with. It may take us a while to get there, but that's one of the reasons that I'm not sure that an option to disable managed libraries altogether is the right solution to the problem you raise. I agree with you, though, that there should be a way to remove / hide the built-in Eagle libraries.

Hi David,

I'm pretty much on the same page as Rachael, and probably most of the other seasoned pro users.

I do not use any external libraries, and don't plan on it in the future. I think the idea of having supplied libraries is good, but most of the parts I've seen from places like Sparkfun and Adafruit are ugly, inadequate, and look as though bare minimum effort was put into them. Most don't have basic things like datasheet links and different technology/package versions.
I think if there are going to be public libraries, there should be a set of design guidelines to ensure consistency and make sure that things like manufacture part numbers and other important attributes are included. Maybe a template to make sure every component has the attributes listed to output a Digikey/Mouser supported BOM.

Also a verified review process or similar to make sure they are correct.

Personally I would like to see enhancements made to the library editor and attributes system to make it easier and cleaner to design and maintain libraries. Things like IPC foorprint generator, modern attribute handling, and WYSIWYG description editor would go a long way to improving the quality of libraries as a whole.

Out of the options you've outlined, I like #1 and #4. I would also be interested in the ability to have personal managed/published libraries.

Keep up the good work.

- Cameron

I found a way to remove the managed libraries completely in the Windows version.

Devs, if you do not want me posting these kind of deeper level hacks please let me know.

Warning: For advanced users only, I am not responsible for any damage or corruption as a result. Perform at your own risk.

Make sure to backup your eaglerc.usr file before making any changes: %AppData%\CadSoft\EAGLE

The managed library files are located in: %AppData%\eagle\lbr

I deleted everything in that folder and they were no longer listed in the control panel. I have not done any extensive testing, so I don't know if this can cause any instabilities.

I wanted to follow up on this. In Eagle 8.2.2 (just released), we added the ability to delete the local copy of a managed library file from within Eagle. If you remove a managed library from use, then select it in the "available" tab, you can click "delete" to delete the local copy of that managed library. In addition, we added the option to only show local libraries in the available tab. If enabled, you'll only see the managed libraries for which you have a local copy. To start using a deleted managed library again, you can uncheck this option and re-download the library.

It sounds like you've already figured out how to do this behind the scenes, but I thought it was important to make this a proper operation in the Eagle UI. This is a first step towards making it easier to avoid the built-in Eagle libraries. I welcome any further feedback or suggestions.

@david.mellis wrote:

Thanks David,

I've now installed v8.2.2 so I will have a look at these changes and let you know if there are any other issues. I do have some other suggestions regarding the managed libraries feature in general, I'll make these suggestions separate from this thread though so as not to pollute this thread.

Best Regards,

Rachael

What about the other direction, where there are old versions of libraries stored locally in the installed EAGLE/lbr directory that you wish to remove and use the managed versions? Why is the delete option disabled for the lbr directory libraries? Sure I could manually remove libraries from the the directory, but I would need to know if there is a managed version first.

All this information is available inside of the manage libraries dialog, so it is most convenient to do this management right here.

Now we have version 9.2.2 and the users are still forced to work with the managed libraries. Of course we can mark them as "not used". However they are still in the control panel. Even if the directories to search in do not point to the manged libraries there is no way to get rid of them (except deleting them on the file system).

I don't think all users want to work with them. Especially when they have own rules and style guides to set up the device models. So has this "feature" been removed in V9.3 ?

You can remove them now fortunately! In fact you've been able to do this for ages. In the control panel if your right click on the top level "Libraries" folder in the tree and choose "Open library manager" and then in the "Available" tab you can select all the managed libraries and then click the "Delete" button.

I agree, a lot of people don't want to use them, but they do play a part when you want to use the ECAD/MCAD integration. Fortunately you can utilise this without having to fully embrace managed libraries and convert everything (I have just one for the very specific purpose of managing footprints/3d packages), so things have actually moved on a lot and are now very workable, especially compared to how things were when I first started this thread.

If you haven't tried v9.3 you should try it. There's not any big new features, but quite a few refinements and bug fixes.

Best Regards,
