duplicating a part hundreds of times in an array how can this be done

Sorry this might be an obvious newbie question .

how can i make multiple copys of a led part and place them in an array so i dont have to copy and past 700 times i eagle this is for an led pcb cob type light borad that could have thouands of leds on

Hi ojosbourne,

Thanks for posting your question on the forum, I hope to be able to helps as much as possible.

It is fairly easy to copy components on your design. Click on the Group Command and define a group surrounding whatever LED you have placed so far.

Now select the COPY command, do a RIGHT click anywhere in the defined highlighted group area and select Copy:Group. Now you will have duplicate of the defined group on your mouse cursor.

To place these LED's in an array click on the ULP icon and select the ULP called Component-Array.ulp. Depending of the shape you wish to configure select the Rectangular or Circular array tab. For operation details click on the HELP button.

Hi @Anonymous,

I hope you're doing well. I would recommend using the component-array.ulp that comes with EAGLE to make your array. Here's the procedure:

1. Place all of the LEDs on your board (or on your schematic so that they show up on the board), it doesn't matter where you place them for this step they just need to be in your board file.

2. Once all of the LEDs have been placed click on Tools > Element Array Placement...

3. In the dialog, pick whether you want a circular or rectangular array and enter the appropriate parameters for your array. If you have any questions about what any of the parameters mean click on the Help button in the dialog.

4. Once you have all of the parameters filled in, click OK and EAGLE will move the components you placed in step 1 to form the array.

So if I want anarry of say 700 i need to randomly paist 700 leds not just 1

Hi ojosbourne,

Yes, but this isn't as daunting as it may sound. Because the ADD command stays active you can place a large amount of parts very quickly because it's one click per part.

Additionally, you can place say 100 and then copy that group of 100 7 times and be done. If it takes 2 seconds to click down an LED(this is an overestimate) then it will take 200 seconds to place 100 components (a little over 3 minutes). Then maybe 5 minutes to do the copies you'll have 700 LEDs on your design plus 2 minutes to setup the array dialog and in about 10 minutes you are done.

I agree there is room for improvement but for now this is the best ready-made solution.

I’m now having an issue with the part being unrecognised etc

This question was for Eagle, not Fusion 360. Eagle has a lot more functionality.
