Eagle 9.2.0 can not unsmash components

Hi,

There is new bug in 9.2.0 version: all components both in schematics and layout are smashed by default (their >NAME and >VALUE fields have their own origin).
The problem is that I can not unsmash them. This leads to other problem: when I try to copy component (i.e. resistor) with repositioned text fields, the copies has other position of text fields..

I think that was intentional. The alignment tool gets you to a starting point.

In my workflow, I start and finish with everything smashed. Never saw much use in having the name/value locked since they are rarely in the best position. The new 'Paintroller' tool is pretty cool too since you can copy all the text attributes with single clicks.

Hi Guys –

This is exactly what we did. :). I am actually writing the complete forum post detailing all of the changes (that has this in it!) but one thing you caught is that all *new* components will come in smashed for exactly the reason you highlighted. When we looked at designs being built by users, the numbers that had part attributes smashed was overwhelming. So this is the new behavior. The parts come in smashed by default. If you want to restore the original, library position of an attribute, right click and select Restore Position. That will restore their positions.

The issue with Copy is a bug and we’ll get that fixed in the next few days. Expect a release with that fixed in it within the next week or so. Thanks for catching that one!

Hmm. Dropping the 'smashed="yes"' attribute means that older versions opening a 9.2.0-edited file add the labels back in creating a mess. Since 9.2.0 doesn't care about the smashed label, would it be kinder to not break backwards-compatibility by keeping that attribute? 🙂

Here's what happens when I edit a file in 9.2.0 then they open it in 9.1.3 😕

This issue has been fixed for 9.2.1 which will be out shortly. In the meantime we don't have a workaround.

Sorry but this is a nightmare on the board layout. Do i have to unsmash everything manually?????? the restore position just puts the text back in the original position, it doesnt switch off the text origin. I cant move components without having to toggle between the text and component origins.

Can you make a toggle for this? or put the name origins on a different layer so they can be hidden. ??? otherwise it just makes it unusable.

I agree with pmoulder78. I do not like my components pre-smashed, I also would prefer an option. This makes my workflow much more difficult. Is there a way to un-smash everything?

I do not understand the problem. I smash everything everytime I make a layout and never unsmash, ever.

I move the components around, no problems. Place the designators after everything is laid out.

Maybe I am missing something?

I think it might depend on what you are designing. I make through hole component PCBs, so I always want the component name centered on the component when I'm building the board layout. I only smash the components if I cannot read the name and move it to a location close to the component. It sounds like this enhancement is good for most designers but for me personally for what I use Eagle for, it is quite a pain.

It would be cool if under the Options -> Set -> Misc. there would be a check box for "Auto Smash" or something of the sort that could be on by default but we could optionally turn it off.

Just to add my 2 cents, the only reason why i'd want to keep text unsmashed is because it's on a layer I used for generating assembly drawings. Sometimes part density is high enough the silkscreen cant be used to show component placement and many assembly fabs want an assembly drawing in addition to a centroid file.

In this case it makes managing the text for creating assembly drawings a little harder but overall i'd like to see better tools from Autodesk in generating supporting documentation from boards, not just gerbers. ODB++ and an actual built in assembly drawing solution would be very useful.

A co-worker and I ran across the same problem, and initially we thought it was a problem from the PCB manufacturer because their preview showed duplicated text (one in the origin, one where I smashed and moved/edited it). Sounds like this is indeed an EAGLE issue in 9.2.0 based on their reply below. The board files are showing text in the origin and also the smashed version now since the "Smashed = Yes" no longer exists. Hope they fix this in a way that it does not affect previous board files now, since I have files opened back and forth in a previous version and current version!

How come there are two representations of the component name on the PCB?

Duplicate names on PCB

If I select "Restore Position" on the component it consolidates to one component name on the PCB, but as soon as I drag it with the mouse to a new position I have two names on the PCB again.

This is a pretty serious problem as I can not place component names anymore. If I move name to a new position a duplicate name remains at the restored position.

Is there anyway both names can be moved to a user defined position. I guess why I see only one name is because they are in the same location after restore.

Is it possible to make a script or something to clean it up?

I've just downloaded 9.2.1 and created a new board.

The components are still autp-smashed. And I still cant move the components without having to cycle through to the component with the right mouse button.

Am i missing something?? Ive seen the new drop down list with the attribute type but i cant disappear the name origin or un-smash all of the components.

I updated mine manually from the Eagle home window. Top right corner.

Still cant un-smash anything though, rubbish!!!

Strange started working when I use odd user interface of the CAM Processor. No duplicate component names on the PCB layout.

And adjusted the copper color to #b0857e and soldermask to #4b0069 of the Manufacturing view and got a realy nice OSH Park tint on my board in the the amazing "Manufacturing view" inside Eagle.

Great. You can see live updates in the manufacturing view when diving into details moving tiny vias away from vital text locations

So just for clarity and in reference to 9.2.1.

- Components will always appear Smashed as default when generating a new board from a schematic

- There is no way to Un-smash component names or values either individually or globally.

- There is no way to hide names or value origins using the layers system
