Custom 3D package is not preserved in PCB

Not sure if this is a feature or a bug (because lately some bugs were suddenly transformed into features), but when I update a custom 3D component, that package is not updated for all components.

And I assume I should use the online library.io system, but that does not really work when you try to manage several libraries that might be also managed by Eagle.
Is there any path that I can follow so I won't have to manually update each component or create a managed library.
Just a simple copy/paste custom 3D package would be great.

Hello @andreikovari95,

I'm assuming that you are assigning the 3D model on the board/schematic. That mechanism is really designed for one offs and not to be a substitute for the managed library. If you don't want to manually update each component then you are better off using a managed library. Another option would be to try to manipulate the XML but I would really discourage that.

And what happens if I use already a managed library and I need to slightly adjust the package, either for being faulty or I need another variant that is not available in that library.
Or if I receive a project that is already made using some other, non-managed libraries.
I'll have to manually update all of them from a newly created library that would be again managed.

As I see it now, you want to force the user to use the online library system and be dependent of your environment.
I wonder how much dead-time would cause some servers being down and the consequences afterwards.
How many times have you asked the community about what they really need? And which feature would improve the quality and the delivery aspects.

You are suffocating Eagle with useless features, instead of perfecting the ones that are crucial and due to recent updates, they are still full of bugs.

Hi @andreikovari95 ,

I hope you're doing well. If you don't like managed libraries, then there is a way to limit their use. Rachael has perfected that type of workflow where you store all of your 3D content in one managed library and then pulling from it into local libraries to support 3D work.

The use of a library is important to maintaining design consistency that's why we discourage one off changes. If you change a model in one file and manufacture it, more than likely you won't remember that it was a one off change you made to a part from the library. 6 months, 1 year down the road you are working on a new design and you use the same library. Because you have a board in production you think "I can just use this library as is, because it's the same one I used for this other board that's out in the field". Boom, you're headed for a board that may not work. That's why we are so strict about making changes in the library, if the library is the single source of truth then you can avoid these types of scenarios.

Servers have been down before and in the worst case, down time has been a few hours. Given how infrequently this occurs it hasn't been an issue. It's a valid concern but so far hasn't proven to be a serious issue in practice.

We get that some users aren't happy with managed libraries, but in those scenarios there's a very good alternative which I wrote above and which Rachael pioneered. We are looking at ways of improving this so stay tuned.
