I have used single sheets in large scaled frames so far. Today i wanted to layout my new design on few sheets but i have encountered that eagle uses this different approach compared to software i use at work. There is nothing that is not understandable here but i just wanted know is there any other way that eagle can handle labels with several sheets like;

Light the sheets on left side of the screen with nets inside them that contain same net we have clicked on instead of putting (/??) tags.

What if the net exists on all the sheets how will it work? How Eagle is going to tag them? As an example let's say i have a net with 5V in all sheets, what i see is in sheet-3 5V/2.2A in sheet-2 i see 5V/1.3A . This makes schematic unreadable and look complicated.

Any help and documentation is appreciated.

Hi

I would like to know how to get meaningful frames in my design. so I get rid of this ?? .

I know that I can change the settings and they are gone. But I read about labels and there I find a statement that I have to use a "frame". Whatever that means. If I use a frame from the EAGLE shared lib there is no coordinates and if I use my own there are these ??.

Can someone tell how that is done properly. I would like to use something like this.

Thanx in advance, Harald

Hello @HarrySatt,

Thank you for your continued participation, I enjoy reading your posts. I know that any posts from you mean I'm going to have to work a little.

You can get an idea of how the XREF labels work by using frames from EAGLE's built in FRAMES library. The hand drawn frame will work as well but you need to put a frame in every single sheet and that becomes repetitive quickly. If you build it as a library part like we have in the frames library you can just reuse them.

The question marks you are seeing in your picture are likely because sheet 4 doesn't have a frame.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you.

Best Regards,

Hi Jorge

fine that I do not ask stupid questions. Should not be after nearly a live time of using EGALE. I started with version 1.0 🙂 and asked a lot of questions. Believe me.

So. I changed my self made sheets document not frame to a frame RAHMEN3Q from the EAGLE shared library for all my sheets but still see question marks in my LABELS. In settings I can see the XREFS %C%R .

Is there anything further I have to do? All my parts are parts created by myself so maybe I have to add something to theses parts?

Regards, Harald.

Hi Harald,

the frame has to be drawn with the FRAME command. In this case you will be able to specify the numbers of columns and rows in the frame. They will give you the information shown in the cross reference labels.

There are a number of frames in the frames library that are simply drawn with the LINE command and we or better the former "EAGLE librarian" added columns and rows "manually". This was before EAGLE offered the FRAME command.

All the frames with "LOC" in the name are made with the FRAME command, for example A4L-LOC, A3L-LOC....

Best regards,

Hi @rbkyorem ,

you asked for

Light the sheets on left side of the screen with nets inside them that contain same net we have clicked on instead of putting (/??) tags.

No sorry, this is not possible.

Let me add some information about cross reference labels from the manual:

LABEL command

If the label option XREF (in the parameter toolbar or by CHANGE XREF ON) is set, a cross reference pointing to an further instance of the chosen net on the next sheet is generated automatically. The cross reference label format can be defined in the menu Options/Set/Misc, Xref label format. See the help function of the LABEL command for the meaning of the placeholders that can be used.

For a proper location of the object you should use a drawing frame with classifications for columns and rows. Such frames can be defined with the FRAME command.

Defining Cross-References for Nets

If you place a LABEL with active XREF option for a net, a cross-reference will be shown automatically. It points to the next sheet where the net occurs again. Depending on the rotation of the label the cross-reference refers to a previous or a following schematic sheet. If the label itself goes towards the

higher page number. If the label points to the left or top border, the previous pages are taken into consideration. In the case that the net is only available on one sheet, this cross reference is shown, independently from the rotation of the label. If the net is only on the current sheet, only the net name and possibly the label's frame around it is shown. This depends on the Xref label format definition which can be done in the menu Options/Set/Misc (can be defined via SET, too).

The XREF option can be activated in the parameter toolbar of the LABEL command or after placing the label with CHANGE XREF ON.

The following placeholders for defining the label format are allowed:

%F enables drawing a flag border around the label

%N the name of the net

%S the next sheet number

%C the column on the next sheet

%R the row on the next sheet

The default format string is %F%N/%S.%C%R. Apart from the defined placeholders you can also use any other ASCII characters. If %C or %R is used and there is no frame on that sheet, they will display a question mark '?'.

The lower label in the picture points to the right and refers to the net ABC on the next page 3, field 4A, the upper XREF label points to the left (beginning with the origin point) and refers to the previous page 1, field 2D.

Hope this helps.
