Civil 3D hangs when inserting Points from File to a specific file

Hello to Autodesk Community!

A new guy in Civil 3D and I am trying to insert into an existing drawing Points from File from a text file (1316 points, PENZ comma separated), that you may find attached (the first digits have been changed to 9s for client's privacy)

While I can insert them almost instantly at a blank new drawing in a new Point Group, when I try to do the same at my existing 160mb working drawing that 2-3 other coworkers have worked on before me (unfortunately I cannot upload due to size limit and privacy issues), it just hangs with aeccimportpoints on the command line and I have to shut it down from Task Manager

In case it may matter, MAPCSASSIGN was run but no Coordinate System was found to be assigned

I have managed to create my surface and do the job by adding in the Surface Definition the txt as a Point File, but I would prefer to have these points directly on the Civil dwg so that it works as a stand alone file.

Any ideas about what could be wrong? Thanks in advance!

Edit: In case somebody may asks, I removed points with no Z values to no avail, it keeps hanging when trying to insert them

Since you were able to bring in the points into a blank drawing. Save it and then try inserting it into your other drawing. Don't know anything about your other software on the other machines or what settings are involved.

You mean as COGO Points? That will add to drawing "weight". So unless there's a reason to keep them as COGO Points, you're better off "adding in the Surface Definition the txt as a Point File".

Could you please describe in greater detail the process of inserting the blank drawing with the correctly inserted points into my work file, so that i may try it??

Yes, as you correctly say, I have inserted them as a Point File and this makes my already heavy file a little lighter. However as this file may be transferred etc, I would prefer these points to be incorporated in the file, so that it can be a standalone working file and avoid losing this information...

If you intend to have the points available as stand-alone data in a working file, you might consider storing them in the survey database instead. This way, you'll have access to them as needed, but they aren't littering any files, until you need them, and once you're done with them in a file, you can remove them from the drawing and still have access to them later.

Your file is missing some z-values. You need to provide z-values for all points (can't leave them blank) or remove those points from the from the file.

You can easily view your file using Excel. From Excel, go to File=>Open=>Browse to your txt file=>Open. <<Make sure 'All Files (*.*) is displayed in the dropdown above the Open button.>> Scroll down to lines 33, 43, 45, 47 and you'll see blank values. This is only mentioned a portion of 'invalid lines' in your file.

@AdammReillyI haven't ever used the survey database but I guess this one is used in my PC only and not on the file. As this file may be used from another PC at our company's network, I would prefer these points to be attached directly on the file, so that it could work as a standalone file without issues. When I find some free time, I will verify that the Survey Database is on the PC and not on the file (if anyone sure, please share your knowledge!)

In any case, it is just very weird that these points can be attached one blank file, and cannot on my working file.

Yes, I tried that option too exactly as you describe it (I mention this at my last line Edit: ...) without success. But even the posted dataset with blank Z values, can be inserted in a blank dwg, so I guess this is not the problem

@skeramidas Just to clarify to you, the survey database is a file that should be located in your Civil 3D project. If it is located on your PC, you need to ensure the Survey working folder is set the same way you set your Civil 3D data shortcut folder. This way the data is shared by anyone that can access the project.

You are right, it is very weird that it can't be inserted to one file when it can in another.
