Cant import PENZD points from a CSV file

Civil 3D won't let me import a set of data points into the program because it seems like it is have trouble importing the first point, but the rest are coming in okay. Help!

Try to change point name of first point. Probably you can't import points because your point number i CSV file have letters. Delete all letters from point name and will be ok.

open up your csv file and see if the is any verbiage prior to point number one. If there is delete it and save your file. Then try to import the points.

Also I see based on the image, it appears that you do not have Easting coordinates listed.

I would get with the surveyor and get a new file something did go right when he uploaded the file.

It appears that the file may have been saved using the "UTF-8 with BOM" formatting. Resave as a UTF-8 file.

Resaved it as you said. It seems like Civil 3D is having trouble importing the first entry. It should be 2, but it is importing as shown above. See the screenshot of the .csv file below.

do you have a point #1? or did it get cut off in the image? If you don't have a point

#1, try renumbering starting with #1

take it to a notepad / replace tab with space and verify that each column is correct and not altered. this sure works. however you could share a file and we give a more specific solution. Cheers

The first point name contains special character, that seems to be the issue.
If you tried changing the name and it worked, then please accept it as a solution so that I could benefit others.

Anyone have a solution for this. Constant problem importing CSV's of survey data. Cicil 3D is a pig for basic functions like this

in the first post you show the point file format as ENZ. This is not correct, it should be PENZD comma delimited. A csv is indeed comma delimited, so you should be good there. Make sure that the point inmport format is looking for a csv. Ours is set up to look for a txt, so you may have to edit the format or the point file extension.

If you have set the correct format in C3D and it still won't import then the problem almost certainly is with the point file. Open it in Notepad - NOT Excel. It should not be space or tab delimited. If it is search and replace with commas, or choose the correct format in C3D.

C3D does not allow alpha numeric point numbering, so make sure the points are numbers only. The point number does not matter (you don't have to start with No. 1), unless there are duplicates (you would be asked what to do in that case in C3D during the import process).

If you use a PENZD comma delimited format, and your point file is Point Number,East,North,Elev,Desc, with no headers, no extra lines, no nothing but comma delimited point data beginning on line 1, as seen in NOTEPAD, it should work.

I've been having the same issue. There is no apparent special character when looking at the first entry in the CSV, yet AutoDesk sees one in its preview. I have copied data to a notepad file then copied into a new notebook but the problem continues.

Hi @rsebastiancoleman,
If the problem continues it's because of the BOM, Byte Order Mark, in the format you're saving the text as. You need to save your text file in ANY other format that doesn't use a BOM.

for what it's worth, I've had VRS GNSS data before create the VRS point with no point number but rather text and this would happen occasionally. probably not the OP's problem but C3D wouldn't import the .csv/.txt point files until I usually removed this particular point. just figured I'd pass this along

I have found that there is some extra bit of formatting that gets saved in cell A1 in both the xlsx and csv format. I have not found a way of getting rid of it so I have started simply saving my PENZD's as .txt and then using AutoCAD to parse the data properly.
