After working for many firms over the years, I found that if you have your .lin file you should check to see what font you are using within it. Since most companies don't assign a linetype to lines with letters you should make one that does specifically for your company linetypes using a font ONLY for use in linetypes. Most companies use Standard and it is problematic to use that. So, first create a text style like LT2. You will notice that the Height is .5. Using 1 would make the letter to be to big for most Survey dwg's so I cut it in half.

then your linetype code would look like this:

*Surv_OHE,OHE LINE ---OHE---OHE---
A,0.2000,-0.1500,["OHE",LT2,S=0.1000,R=0.000,X=-0.1150,Y=-0.02800],-0.0800

Make sure your xfef has the same text style used in both dwg. That should cure your issue.

I have numerous files that have layers loaded that have a letter in the linetype. For example existing sewer has a single S in the line. These lines used to show the S, and now they do not. I can go back to very old versions of drawings which printed with the S, were closed and never touched and the S is gone. I have numerous linetypes like this that are no longer working. Anyone ever run into this? Thank you.

The original Xref in model space is where the line was drawn no longer has the letter in it. I then have sheets with that Xref and model nor paperspace viewports shows the line with the letter in it.

First thought would be that there is a problem with the Font. Can you post the portion of the .lin file that contains the linetype?

Sounds like linetype scale. Would it be possible to upload the Xref with the offending line?

I have dug back to an old archived template that years ago had the correct linetype associated with this layer and now it is a different linetype. Haven't opened viewed or saved this file in years. I know it was put away with the linetype containing the S. This seems like a system issue vs a drawing specific issue. I cannot share files for privacy purposes.

Can you copy and paste the line so it's in a brand new, clean drawing?

Use 0,0 and the basepoint when copying and insert at 0,0 when pasting.

No, doesn't sound like a bug, sounds more like linetype scale.

I agree with @AllenJessup it sounds like it is a font issue if all you are doing is opening the files and the text is gone, unless you have some customization that changes your linetype scale when you open a file. When you open the drawing, does the command line show any substitutions for shx files? do you have a screenshot of what the linetype should look like? You should be able to either share the lin file used to create the linetype, or a drawing that only has that line in it without violating any privacy agreements.

Is the font used in the linetype loaded in the drawing? In the .lin file if it is using "standard", then you need a font style named "standard" in the dwg otherwise it doesn't know what font to use.

Try specifying an alternate font in Options.
