Good morning all.

We did a topo about a year ago. We are now starting a new topo across the road but I wanted to insure we are on the same horizontal/vertical datum as the original topo as this is for the same client.

Crew set up on 2 original points and traversed to new site to establish control on new site. When we GPS'd a couple of the new points we were over a foot out. We have discovered some of the original control was out.

Make a long story short, I am wanting to rotate and translate (move) my original surface.

I tried testing on my original surface. Moving at all messes up the surface, like my breaklines are no longer defined. Once I rotate, my spot elevations are no longer in the same place. Attempted to use align at 1st and seen the FUBAR so attempted moving, then rotating to what happens.

Help me Obi-Wan, you're my only hope.

Don't try to Move, Rotate, etc. the actual Surface. Work on the original data such as Points and Breaklines. The Surface should update from them.

It looks like if you select the Points, Breaklines and the Surface it works. It may have to do with the amount of Edits in the Surface definition..Unfortunately, it looks like you'll lose a lot of the edits.

One possibility might be to extract 3D Faces from the original Surface and create a new Surface from those, making sure to check the "Maintain edges from objects" box.

If I'm understanding, originally, I thought you were saying to leave the surface itself alone. To just move the points and the rest of the drawing and the surface would follow. But now, I should be moving the surface along with everything else?

That will work. I tested it in the drawing you posted. However, due to the number of edits to the original Surface that would be lost. I'd recommend extracting the 3D Faces then moving and rotating them as needed. Then create a new Surface from the 3D Faces.

You'll be left with the original Surface and a new translated Surface. If you want the new Surface to replace the original one. Erase the original Surface and rename the new one.

I did originally say move just the Points and Breaklines because that's the way I remember a Dynamic Surface working. It just didn't in this case.

Ok. I'm a little new to extracting surface data, so please excuse my ignorance. When I select the surface, I see the pull down that says "Extract from Surface". But, I don't see anything about 3D faces? If I look under "Extract Objects from Surface" the only options is points, triangles, major contour & minor contour.

Where is the extract 3D Face?

Sorry. I should have mentioned that you have to have Triangles displayed in order to have 3D Faces as an option. The options are based on the display. So if you wanted to extract Contours. You'd have to set a Surface Style that showed Contours.

So you must set a Surface Style that at least displays Triangles.

I took your Points, Triangles and Border style and turned off the Contours. I selected the Surface and went to Surface Tools > Extract from Surface > Extract Objects. That gave the the 3D Faces option.
