Try using the Data Connect Palette. Yes, you can use MAPIINSERT but just because you can, doesn't mean you should. <<I think you meant MAPIINSERT, not MapImport. The former imports rasters while the latter imports vectors.>>

Once you've connected to your raster, do this:

Assign the appropriate coordinate system, e.g. State Plane and Zone, UTM/zone, etc.

Open the Data Connect Palette=>>'Add Raster Image' by browsing to and selecting your SID file. On command line enter MAPCONNECT==>The Data Connect Palette opens. Click 'Add to Map' and your image appears in modelspace.

Open the Map Task Pane. On command line enter MAPWSPACE==>'O' for Open==>The Task Pane opens. Your image will be listed as a LAYER in the Task Pane.

In modelspace, pan and zoom-in on your target area, leaving the unnecessary portions, such as the outer edges, out-of-view and offscreen.

Back in the Task Pane, right-click the SID layer listed in the Task Pane==>Resample Raster=>Image reduces to the limits of the 'monitor-view' while the offscreen portions are no longer displayed.

Pan around. Zoom in and out. Does performance improve?

To return to the original extents of the raster, use mouse wheel to zoom out. Use your judgement to determine whether you've zoomed out enough to 'view' the entire image had you not executed resample raster earlier. Next, perform step 5 again and the raster will resample to monitor-view or the outer edges of your original SID image .

Joe,

Personally I've not seen any issues with SIDs as of late, there was a point were there was a format change that Adesk didn't keep up with that wouldn't allow them to load. Performance wise, I really don't use them enough to elaborate, we do get the most current ones for our projects but I generally prefer to just use the Bing maps, I'm not publishing anything with aerials often, its just reference.

Thanks Rick.

i prefer the jp2 the state DOT makes available. Some counties still have sid and that’s where I am, unfortunately.

i will see today if it’s the Sid or my VPN.. which is usually fairly reliable.

the resolution of the online maps - that’s what you mean by Bing? - is ok for some design work but we often include an aerial plan, and the DOT maps are good for that.

Yeah. They're good. But we're thinking of contracting with some place like Nearmap. The images currently on the State site for my area are 5 years old. Last years fly is supposed to be up soon. But things change so quickly. We'd like to get a flight twice a year. Plus, if the money is right, obliques and point clouds.

Yes, MAPIINSERT, and I am also comfortable using FDO connect. they both bring the images in and the performance does not change. If I do the same with the same number of jp2 files performance is fine.

Sid raster are typically ‘wide-range.’ They cover a wide, super wide, area of land. They are typically high resolution and taken from high altitude. They are heavy files and need to be compressed. To use them your program must decompress them and that takes times and energy, hence the slow down.

Resample the raster to ‘reduce’ the data. BTW you can’t resample unless you use the Map Task Pane and using the task pane means you gotta abandon MAPIINSERT command.
