topic Analyze cross slope along an alignment at regular intervals, then export to .shp in Civil 3D Forum

Hello. I'm new at using CIVIL3D and have been absolutely clueless on how to do this:

I have the alignment of a pipeline that we'll be needing to assess for seismic safety. Now, one of the parameters needed in this assessment is the slope/grade perpendicular to the pipeline at regular intervals (say every 50 m).

Here's the alignment:

If we zoom in, we'll see the following details:

> The pipeline alignment colored green in the middle (over 28 km total length)

> The narrow survey data around the pipeline ( spans around 30m each side)

> The sample lines I've created at 50m intervals across the pipeline that are approx. within the survey data

Now, we'll need to process the data in QGIS so I'll need to export the results in .shp. The resulting .shp would look like this:

It would be a series of points (tho it looks like a dash in the picture) located where the pipeline and the sample lines intersect. Each point should contain a parameter indicating the grade across the sample line where it derived from. For example, let's look at the first sample lines:

The first sample line has grade of 18.22%, then the next sample line has a grade of 0%. So first points in the output .shp should have a value of 18.22, then 0.. and so on.

So far I have created the sample lines and then hit a dead end. Seems like I can't get the slope of sample lines directly so I tried drawing a line on top of the sample lines, then get the grade from the lines. However, it also seems that lines don't have an attribute that contains its grade and I can only see it grade by adding a line label for grade.

Im'm really not sure how to go forward from this. I'd very much appreciate any help, thanks!

PS. I can't attach the files I used because it's too large.

Hi Robert,
Welcome to the Autodesk Forums.
An interesting problem. What will you be doing in QGIS that you can't do in Civil 3D?
You can post a DropBox link to your drawing. Or WeTransfer works good too.
Dave
