When working with very flat surfaces I usually exagerate 20 times their elevations. However, I always have to use a surface style with the border's layer turned off. I have never needed the exagerated edge of the surface and therefore never thought this was a problem. However, now that you mention it, it might be a good idea for Autodesk to work on.
